February 2024 | Art At The Rendon has been hosting Venice Beach, CA-based artist JD Smith () at their private pop-up artist residency studio in Los Angeles. This marks Smith’s first art residency in his career. In this video, Smith speaks about his latest series that has been in development during his 8-month residency, where he renders intricately detailed World War II battleships on sheets of paper measuring up to twelve feet in length.

The Art At The Rendon: Art Residency provides artists with an inspiring and collaborative environment where they can create and engage with other artists, all while being immersed in the local cultural landscape. In appreciation of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District’s rich history, we aspire to amplify education and the arts within the community.

While establishing our future permanent studio residency program, which will be housed at The Rendon Hotel, we are currently hosting artists in our office/studio space in DTLA. We aim to cultivate a space that allows creative risk-taking, community building, and growth. Each residency is distinct, as we encourage artists to explicate their working practice and process so we can best interpret their needs.

After 6 long years... The Rendon hotel gets approved!! To all of our Art At The Rendon family, we couldn't have done it without you.

As many of you know, it's been 6 years since owners Ralph Ziman & Maria Greenshields-Ziman's dreams of building a hotel by artists, for artists, and with artists came to fruition. Within those 6 years, we've had the pleasure of hosting 3 major immersive events, 5 projects in partnership with our neighboring institutions, had over 7 murals created on the face of the existing building, and held a virtual artist salon series during the pandemic.

On October 24, 2024, we finally cleared the finish line as the Los Angeles City Council voted to approve the project!

Our heartfelt thanks to each of you who have sent in personalized letters of support to your councilmembers, showed up to our hearings at City Hall, and/or have offered your support near and far in a multitude of ways.

We can't wait to continue our Art At The Rendon events & arts programming once the hotel is built. Follow us for updates along the way!

A few months ago, we had the pleasure of hosting contemporary artist and DJ Bisco Smith for 6 weeks at our private pop-up artist residency studio in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District.

In this video, Bisco shares his process of creating artwork and his latest series, RE/STRUCTURE.

"This collection of works is a response to the current state of the world both internally and externally. From becoming a parent for the first time to the pandemic, politcs, and power, it's all in the paint. Looking forward to sharing the energy with you all." - Bisco Smith, 2022

Have you checked out Moncho1929's mural at the Rendon yet?!

February 2022: The Rendon Media crew followed Moncho1929 as he painted a new mural, Wild and Free, at The Rendon, located at 2055 E 7th Street in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. In this video, Moncho1929 shares his upbringing with art and how it has driven both his public works and paintings.

The mural plays with the reference of a free form of motion. To move unhindered and wild is central to the growth of a culture and the spaces between. The shapes and colors intertwine and add to the entire space, in a similar tone as a society intertwining and adding to the collective journey. Each moment in the collective motion is captured and gives a view of an abstracted energy we all share in a bustling and changing city.

The event will kick off with a 30-minute program featuring ICA LA staff, board members, artists, and special guests. After the program, the online art sale will open. All guests will be given access to the viewing room simultaneously and artworks will sell quickly! The sale will be open until 8pm PT.
