Global Tribe was formed in 1989 in Miami by DJ Ruben Pagan & Carl Barton, aka "Carl B Dread". It's primary home the legendary Cameo Theater on South Beach is where Hip Hop history in South Florida was made. The infamous GT party known as "ONE" was navigated by a certain frequency of Hip Hop and never wack commercialism, as what Hip Hop has become in the last 2 decades. Lets profile the playas...FI
RST on deck, is Premier Selecta Chris Morales aka "DJ Klassik", along with WEDR FM's dynamic duo Wayne Walters & Kevin Flournoy, known as the "Whiz Kids". These cats were the original DJs who spun at the very first hip hop parties Carl B and Ruben hosted a year earlier at a venue then known then as "Jonestown" or "Joseph's on the Beach" located at 323 23rd Street Miami Beach. Without Chris or the Whiz Kids, there would never have been a Global Tribe family, and REAL Hip Hop music in the (305) would have to wait a bit longer as second choice in popularity to urban youths who favored Miami's endemic bass music. Local Miami DJs, graffiti crews and breakdancers embraced the conscious folklore & culture encompassing the tribal elements of the 80's Hip Hop platform for years before the Cameo Theater's original one-nighter. In contrast, although Hip Hop early on had a profound influence on Miami's inner city youth, there was still a separation of music genres. Hip Hop, R & B, Soulful dance and Reggae were seemingly homogenized and rare to be mixed together compared to much of the efforts made by New York's pioneer music stations WBLS and 98.7 KISS FM whom pioneered in emitting the traditional party rockin" elements that soon reached many shores everywhere. Word got out, and the vibe spread like wildfire. Eventually Super DJ/VJ Tom Laroc came down from Rhode Island to join the crew and help in the efforts. Among the efforts mentioned here is Michael Capponi who came onboard to the family early on at the age of 17 young, he was preceded by Pervert skate wear designer/artist Don Busweiler. Without these 2 highly motivated and very talented individuals, our collective success as a production crew may not have been as far reaching for they both delivered time and time again, what the crew needed, and then some. They both went on to achieve mammoth success in their early careers as time went on. In recent months, there has been an outpouring of requests by the many hip hop heads and family that frequented our parties back then to host an Official Global Tribe Reunion. We are asking all our friends to help fast track this a objective by promoting our page and spreading the word like wildfire in the name of CONSCIOUS Hip Hop....
It's nothing new that the cultivation of music, art, dancing and conscious lyrical expression and it's influence has been eclipsed by the usual greed and exploitation that happens all too often whenever an idea, medium or movement gains traction and momentum in the mainstream, specially if it confronts hate, fear and division.
