Shady Creek Outdoor School is located in the mountains of Nevada County, California. Every year thousands of 5th and 6th graders from several surrounding counties attend a week long, in residence, outdoor education program focused on environmental education.
The photo says it all….. THANK YOU to everyone who was a part of our Open House yesterday! It was such a gift to see so many people come out from so many communities and have some Shady Creek fun. Overall we counted around 170 guests in attendance….. the plan is to double it for next year!

Shady Creek Outdoor School is proud to open our gates for all! This Open House is focused on our Outdoor School…. So get ready for a magical time! Our tours will focus on our facilities and trails that students will encounter in their everyday camp experience. Guided by none other than the Naturalist staff, they will be informative but not too strenuous on the body. Then we will rock on with a one of a kind Shady Creek program! Q&A to follow.

Please come on out and join us Sunday, October 15th for our Shady Creek Open House!! This event is free to all……..and all are welcome!
1:00-2:00pm - Guided tours of cabins, bathrooms, dining hall and facilities. We will also show off some of our outdoor classrooms, trails and learning spaces.
2:00 3:00pm Shady Creek Magic! Music, animals and skits…… essentially, the full Shady Creek experience in an hour and a half!

This afternoon was SO MAGICAL!! Being surrounded by some of the “original” team members of Shady Creek is a gift. It’s their hard work and dedication that helped build the foundation that we stand on today! Love you Moose, Monsoon and Quail!
I am SO PROUD to officially introduce the world to our full Shady Creek Team! In my 18 years with this program, I can honestly say that this year has a different feel to it. I know with all my heart that it is destined for excellence. The largest staff ever, the largest roster of schools scheduled than ever which means…….more students getting that Shady Creek magic than ever before! It’s going to be a year for the record books, I can feel it in my soul. Let’s go!

The intent of this scholarship is to provide four $1000 scholarships to students graduating high school in Yuba, Sutter and Colusa Counties who fully intend to play collegiate sports at a community college, a four-year college or university. The applicant either plans to play a sport or has already been accepted to a collegiate sports program.
We are pleased to be able to offer this very special scholarship opportunity to our high school graduates who truly love sports as much as did the scholarship's namesakes: Eric Pomeroy and Alec Flores

We are partnering with Yuba Sutter Marketplace to bring the second annual Prom Wear Giveaway happening Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 11AM - 2PM.
We need donations to make this event a success! If you would like to donate formal wear dresses, suits, shoes or accessories, donations may be dropped off at Yuba Sutter Marketplace Management Office Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 4 PM (closed for lunch 11:30-12:30). You may also drop off donations to the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools at 970 Klamath Lane Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 4 PM.
Please call 530-755-2500 if you have any questions. The final date for donation is Tuesday, April 11th, 2023.
During the event on April 15th, families may come to Yuba Sutter Marketplace and choose an outfit for their student to take home that same day. In addition to clothing, there will be shoes and accessories to try on. We will have coupons and prizes from our retailers as well.

Our students had the best time in the snow! They were shouting and smiling as the snow started to fall all over campus!
Shady Creek has snow! We are keeping warm and dry in the dining hall. The students and naturalists are singing songs, performing skits, and playing games.
The kitchen is preparing lunch for the students that are still here.
Your school will reach out to you with more information regarding departure. We will make sure your kids a warm, fed, and entertained until it is safe to go home.

This year Shady Creek Outdoor School is celebrating 15 years since our big move from Woodleaf. It has been an epic wild ride to say the least.
It all wouldn’t be possible without these two incredible people next to me. George Stratman and Shannon Cueva are the reason we are where we are today at Shady Creek. I love them as Directors…. I love them even more as family. They both took me seriously before anyone else in Outdoor Education and are the best support team I could ever ask for.(You too Jason!) I am so proud to be the third Director of the Shady Creek era and am honored to carry on the legacy of this program.
It was a BLAST having our Sutter County Superintendent of Schools family up at the Shady Creek campus! And what better way to welcome everyone than with the musical tune of "Dirt Made My Lunch"?!

So this week is special……
It was devastating to close our doors 2 years ago due to the pandemic sweeping across the globe. So many students missed out on the opportunity to come and attend a week at camp….. and that opportunity for most, is never reclaimed.
This week we celebrate the 8th graders who would have been here 2 years ago…. By serving them THIS WEEK at Shady Creek! It is the highlight of this Phoenix season that we get to have experiences like these….. claiming back joy that that is long overdue. Speaking positive words, witnessing the wonder of nature and connecting with each other. This is the BEST!
It’s week #5 with students at Shady Creek Outdoor School! So much fun in store for all…… each week is truly an adventure!
This here is Piper, our Western Screech Owl being held by one of our incredible naturalists Mountain Goat after wrapping up a quick presentation for students before night hikes. BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Week #4 was the BEST!! It started off with a snow flurry during the intro of “Dirt Made my Lunch”….. which made it beyond memorable! The week from there just blasted off into another stratosphere!! Amazing kids, cabin leaders, teachers, administrators and the greatest Shady Creek team ever assembled…… It’s definitely all worth it to bring this back! BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Week #3 with students was INCREDIBLE!! We don’t take a single week for granted and this one was one for the record books! The feeling of PURE JOY was everywhere….. it was one of the weeks that fills your soul for days/months/years! Thank you Shady Creek family for doing what you do!

Incredible week #2 with students at Shady Creek Outdoor School! Thank you all of our people from Corning, California for making this week more than just a week….. you made the “magic” of Shady Creek real! Seeing 150 7th grade teens revert back into being children again is a feeling/experience we don’t take for granted. I wish everyone in the world could have seen it….It doesn’t get much better than this! BOOMSHAKALAKA
