Gamification in team building is not new, but did you know bringing gamification into your day to day work can yield huge benefits? If you're not sure where to start in bringing gamification to your everyday, start with planning a Great Gotham Challenge as your next team building to get the creative and gamification juices flowing.

From the Harvard Business Review: "Gamification can enhance engagement because its mechanics activate three core elements of our motivational system. First, we need to feel autonomous; the desire to direct our own life. Games allow us the ability to choose a path. Second, we need to feel competent; the desire to be demonstrably effective. Games allow us to experience progress towards mastery. Third, we need to feel relatedness; the desire to be connected with others. Games allow us to work with and against others and builds a community around a shared interest."

Employee disengagement is a persistent problem, and attempts to inject excitement often fall flat. However, gamification — using elements of games to motivate — has serious potential when thoughtfully executed. This article explores the psychology behind gamification, successful examples, and ho...

TL;DR - The ‘Fun Scale’ outlines three types of fun: Type I (fun while you’re doing it, you’d gladly do it again) Type II (only fun in retrospect, you’d do it again) and Type III (at no point is it fun, you’d never voluntarily do it again). I share three takeaways from the Fun Scale we c...

More than a year's worth of planning came together on October 14th, as we collaborated to debut Compass 2023. This 14-hour, puzzle-filled, scavenger hunt event sent its 150 participants all over New York City, searching for clues and solving puzzles to be the first team to cross the finish line in the wee hours of the morning. Along the way teams interacted with actors on the streets of NYC, played theremins, decoded Tiffany lamps, danced on giant pianos, and ultimately acquired and assembled the required components in order to bring the lost cosmonauts home.

Compass is a bi-annual fundraising event to benefit Good Shepherd Services. Compass 2023 raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, enabling Good Shepherd to continue providing its services to the NYC community.

Here at the Great Gotham Challenge, we love crafting elaborate and delightful experiences, be those our off the shelf teambuilding offerings or something much more elaborate like this completely custom hunt in the form of Compass 2023! If you're looking for a unique way to engage your team or audience, reach out to us!

DYK: Prior to the now-iconic Macy's Thanksgiving day parade was the Raggamuffin Parade, a "peculiar tradition of children painting their faces and donning tattered clothes to masquerade as 'ragamuffins' who asked 'Anything for Thanksgiving?' as they went door-to-door asking for pennies, apples and pieces of candy." 04/28/2021

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, on March 25, 1911, was the deadliest industrial disaster in the history of the city, and one of the deadliest in U.S. history. The fire caused the deaths of 146 garment workers – 123 women and girls and 23 men– who died from the fire, smoke inhalation, or falling/jumping to their deaths. Most of the victims were recent Italian and Jewish immigrant women and girls aged 14 to 23.

The factory was located on the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of the Asch Building, at 23–29 Washington Place, near Washington Square Park. The 1901 building still stands today and is now known as the Brown Building. It is part of and owned by New York University.

Because the doors to the stairwells and exits were locked (a then-common practice to prevent workers from taking unauthorized breaks and to reduce theft), many of the workers could not escape from the burning building and jumped from the high windows. The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which fought for better working conditions for sweatshop workers. - wiki
