A promise fulfilled, a dream realized.
WEMBLEY ATHLETIC CLUB INC.
THE DREAM:
The journey began more than sixty years ago, with the formation of a cricket and soccer team. In 1955 the club became incorporated in New York State. After moving from two addresses in Manhattan, the club made a bold move by acquiring space at 4056 White Plains Road in the Bronx. The club operated from that venue for sixteen years. During those years the club flourished beyond expectation and became well established, known and recognized.
The success was not without set backs and disappointments. On two separate occasions the building was devastated by fire. The strength and resilience of the membership was put to the test. Their response was forthright and in no time they had the club back in operation. On two other occasions, the authorities of the city government closed down the club. Again the membership responded and quickly put their beloved club back in operation. Unfortunately, during the months the club was closed the social environment around the club changed drastically. All the strength and resolve of the membership was not enough to overcome this situation. It finally got to the point, where that section of the Bronx was no longer conducive to our operation, membership and clientele.
In February of 1992, the club purchased the present location (550 East 239th Street, Bronx, NY 10470) and immediately the membership set about to modify the building. The modification was completed in September of the same year and operations commenced immediately.
The PROMISE:
The club is a member of the New York Cricket league and participates in its annual competition. Throughout the years the club promoted and engaged in strong social, recreational and sporting activities, including many trips to England, Jamaica and Canada. The social calendar includes the following annual events:
The Mothers Day Luncheon.
The Annual Boat Ride.
Annual Anniversary Dance.
The monthly Third (3rd) Fridays: Celebrate your birthday with us.
The New Years Eve Gala Ball.
In recent years the club has become the venue for many weddings, anniversary celebrations, dinner dances, meetings and conferences. The club is now an integral part of the West Indian American community.
During the years a number of members passed away, and they will always be remembered. In recent years we lost Fitzie Fowles and Roy Francis, two of our founders, John Lynn, a past President, and Winston 'Buss' Reid, a beloved and dedicated member. Their untimely departure was just too much to bear. May their souls rest in peace.
All these accomplishments are tributes to the many members who have dedicated their time and service to the upliftment of their club. A special tribute must be paid to the founders who had the foresight in 1954 to have this vision. It is said that young men dream dreams, but old men have visions. Let's continue to act upon our dreams and visions.
