Ahhhh, the glamour of show biz! Getting prepped for writing live-on-camera as the legendary Ronald for a TV commercial. Full body outfit. The Red Wig was shipped in a thick metal box that looked strong enough to be protecting an atomic bomb. I always wear ill fitting bright yellow gloves when working, so that was no big deal, but the heavy wig was a bit distracting.

I call it “Ghostwriting”… Striving to keep the touch as light as possible, where, instead of lifting the pen, the nib leaves a trace of ink one molecule in thickness, and the pen is on the edge of falling right through my fingers.

I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending Anthony when he was starting out with a local pizzeria here at the Jersey Shore decades ago. My hand was Johnny Depp’s “body double” - doing writing live-on-camera in Tim Burton’s wonderful film Sleepy Hollow. This hypodermic styled syringe fountain pen was created on set and fashioned to write, but not without some difficulty. Thinned out acrylic paint was the only “ink” viscous enough to freely flow, but thick enough to still manage when writing by lifting the needle to oppose too much of the gravity fed overflow. Great fun with the cameras rolling… I had the pleasure of meeting Martin Landau, Tim Burton, Danny Elfman and Johnny Depp. I cannot name drop any further… so I offer you this anecdote: Depp was selected by People magazine soon after as “Sexiest Man Alive,” so I always felt I had the sexiest hand alive, at least in the year 2003.

Probably in 1980, when living in the East Village shortly after graduating from The Cooper Union, I took this chalk drawing from a subway wall panel. Have enjoyed this Radiant Baby in my various living spaces for many years now… I know it’s debatable - but it seemed fine at the time to preserve something that was destined to be covered over by a cigarette ad soon enough… and loved Haring’s work, so vital in the day, as it still is today.

UNBOXING! A new batch of Maisner easel/canvas notecards, soon to be on exhibit at Bergdorf Goodman (and always on the Maisner store website). Engraved burnished gold easels with original hand-painted imagery on each card. Every miniature piece of art was drawn and painted personally by Bernard, with love, but also with a bit of a healthy tease reflecting on the state of much modern and contemporary art. But whose to say? Each set of eight cards is different from the next, and all come in Maisner’s beautiful fabric covered “envelope-flap” designed stationery box.
