Our Story
A few years ago, there was a FREE EVENT at HUNTER COLLEGE TH105 (between 68th and 69th Streets and Lexington Avenue) on Thursday, May 4th from 6-10 p.m.. LIVE MUSIC GROUP presents "ROCK and METAL FEST" featuring ABNEGATION (Signed to Pest Productions), WINTER NIGHTS, UNIVERSAL TRUTH MACHINE and ALEX von NIHIL. The party and the ambiance was truly legendary as CUNY students, alumni, professors, security guards, janitors, and people from the community rocked out to the rockin’, heavy af sounds and ate copious amounts of fast food. The smoke machine percolated mass quantities of smoke transporting us to Middle Earth as the strobe light beamed a crepuscular glow. We had a great time and it was lit, yall. And thus CUNY Rocks was born as a promotions company within the wild and woolly music scene of NYC.
Created by W***y Reed and DJ SQRL, who are Hunter and Brooklyn College alumni and graduate students, and joined by local celebrity singer songwriter Jeff Rose who is also a former CUNY student, we seek to present the best in Rock, Rap and EDM for fans of all ages. We specialize in hard to find genres such as old school rap, gangster rap, hip hop, death metal, black metal, progressive metal, power metal, and goth EDM / EBM. We promote music all over the city but especially at all ages venues so that freshmen also get a taste of what the city has to offer in terms of music. Another thing we are committed to presenting is afternoon matinees because the majority of students have a stringent curfew.
We are proud to be the promoters and managers of Brazilian sensation Thunder Spell for this fall. This will be this top notch Fantasy Power Metal band’s first tour in the US. If you like DragonForce, Power Glove, and Rhapsody of Fire, you will love Thunder Spell because they shred hard. Our events will be catered by Two Bros Pizza and a Halal Cart. There will be generic Beers on sale for those of age.
