A Newberry College holiday tradition returns this Friday as the Department of Music presents Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30pm in Wiles Chapel. The NC Chamber Orchestra, NC Singers, and community members will be conducted by Dr. Patrick Casey and Dr. Jonathan Hall, with appearances by soloists Alyssa Anstey, soprano; Amanda Walker, mezzo-soprano; Matthew Hamilton, tenor; Jeramy Oropeza, baritone; and Dr. Chris Sheppard, bass. Come celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with us!

Newberry music students enjoyed attending the SC Philharmonic in rehearsal Friday afternoon on stunning music of Lili Boulanger and Serge Rachmaninoff. They even were able to meet Maestro Nakahara, who welcomed the group onto the stage at the rehearsal break.

The department’s chapter of Delta Omicron will be hosting their fall musicale this Sunday evening in the AMC Recital Hall. Join us for a fun evening of music!

Join us for a weekend of band events! First, the NC Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band will perform a combined concert on Thursday, November 16 at 7:30 in Wiles Chapel. The bands are under the direction of Dr. Jerry Gatch, and the concert will include music by Sousa, Ellington, and Ed Kiefer, who will be a guest conductor. In attendance will be over 80 high school students from 18 different schools from across the state. 

Those students will then participate in the college’s 6th Annual Honor Band Clinic. Rehearsals begin Thursday night and continue through Saturday morning. Come hear the results at their (free) concert on Saturday at 2pm in Wiles Chapel.

Learn to create quality video recordings of your own performances and auditions using just your smartphone and inexpensive supplies! Pianists will attend a free workshop on the basics of video recording with guest clinician Dr. Cory High, then polish a piece in a master class with Newberry College faculty. In the afternoon, participants can put their skills to work in an optional $25 video recording session with Dr. High in the AMC Recital Hall. Sessions are limited, so be sure to reserve a time in advance!

Today the Scarlet Spirit was joined by over fifty high schoolers from seventeen different schools for our annual Join the Band Day! Students participated in a variety of game day activities, including a pep rally and playing in the stands with the band.

Congratulations to piano professor Dr. Sarah Masterson on being awarded Third Prize in the 2023 Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music (professional division), for her recording of Philippa Schuyler’s “Seven Pillars of Wisdom”! Thanks to funding from the South Carolina Arts Commission (which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts), a generous award from the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina, and Newberry College, she will be recording more of Schuyler’s piano music this winter.

Last week, NC Singers and Madrigals toured South Carolina performing at high schools and churches. They visited Greenwood, Irmo, Lexington, Charleston, and Beaufort, with a final performance on Sunday evening in Newberry.

Prof. Wanda Neese, Newberry music majors, and alumni will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of legendary Russian pianist, composer, and conductor Rachmaninoff on Sunday, November 12. The event will include a display of research findings and memorabilia (2:30pm) and an all Rachmaninoff concert (3:30pm) in the AMC Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

After a quick stop in Key Largo, our group visited the Everglades National Park today. A big thank you to Dr. Sara Peters for the unofficial tour! We even saw some wildlife.

After a full day of College Music Society concerts and workshops (and a lecture-recital by Dr. Sarah Masterson and Newberry alum Paul Johnson), students visited the University of Miami campus for a concert at the Frost School of Music.
