Listen in from 1-2PM EST to hear Syrinx (reimagined) with new gorgeous electronics by Sean William Calhoun (I appear after Rampal plays Syrinx, that’s not nerve wracking! 🤣)

The point of this reimagined version is to have Syrinx live on 🔥

And then Chloe Upshaw’s lovely Prismatic Wind 💨

Hope you can listen in! William Grosvenor Neil also kindly interviewed me briefly so I will also be talking about the two tracks.

Thank you again to William!

I'm getting so excited to share this at the Rochester Flute Fair next week!

It's been a wonderful project of love to start my blog The Insightful Creative and to have amazing conversations with all kinds of incredible people about creativity, and many conversations and ideas have made it into this presentation - so thank you! (You know who you all are!)

I hope to create space for everyone attending to think about some questions for themselves around what is important to their creative selves, what's getting in the way, and how to go forward with all the risks involved in what we need to do because of the profound love we have for our creative work.

Saturday 10/26, 9:15-10:00AM!

Getting back on my feet and getting super excited for the next thing coming up - it's a big solo concert I'm planning, and I hope you can come to it!

Momentum: music for flute and flute and electronics will be with the good people at Payton Violins and will feature some pretty cool music (I'm super lucky and grateful to a bunch of awesome composers writing me stuff and/or sharing recent work of theirs to include on the program).

Two beautiful works for flute and electronics are by flutist-composers Tessa Brinckman and Chloe Upshaw who are trusting me with their lovely music, and there are some works recently written for me by the full of boundless energy and ideas Sean William Calhoun (a new beautiful work about quantum mechanics for alto and electronics called Duality Keys - see below) and the dear Kari Telstad Sundet who is writing me a new work at this moment that explores maelstorms in Norway! In addition to these pieces I am working on a few solo pieces that are fascinating for me to learn or to revisit, by Shulamit Ran and Anna Clyne.

And there will be an audience participation piece where we will improvise with fidget spinners and other toys with motion and create an original piece about momentum!

More to come, but could you mark your calendars for December 7 at Payton Violins in the meantime - thank you!

Welcome to blog post #11 of The Insightful Creative.

Morgann Elyce Davis Parrish and I met for the first time in person last year at the Philadelphia Flute Fair in West Chester, PA, but we had known of each other for years, connected through our shared mentor, Stephanie Jutt, when we studied at UW-Madison—though at different times.

Being connected on social media, I noticed Morgann’s care and thoughtfulness with her students in various posts she shared. I began admiring her writing, her reflective questions about being a creative, and the creative process that invite a sense of deep self-knowing in what we do.

Morgann reflects: “What would happen if we could focus on both the quality of our work and the quality of our life based sheerly on our own perspective? What if we decided to focus on our interior lives? Could it make us better artists to prioritize feeling at home in ourselves?”

What work or life feels closest to your true self?

New blog post on The Insightful Creative!

It’s been almost a month since starting this blog and 10 posts in, with 310 of you reading over this past month. That’s amazing. Thank you for being a part.

Some reflections since beginning a month ago:

We love creativity and are curious about it. Telling stories and sharing ideas around our creativity builds a sense of shared understanding, common ground, and empathy. There are moments of vulnerability that can provide a sense of validation to others experiencing similar struggles or breakthroughs. All of this can help create a bond, as those reading can see their own stories reflected in the experiences of others.

All of these stories and shared ideas - or insights - around creativity invite reflection, thought, and dialogue. When we see others sharing their personal stories and experiences about their creative process, it creates space for deeper conversations for ourselves and others. We can reflect on how our own creativity can be made more resilient, can grow, or can be shaped in our own lives.

It’s been almost a month since starting this blog and 10 posts in, with 310 of you reading over this past month. That’s amazing. Thank you for being a part. What are you paying attention to today? What are you astonished by?

Maria Brandt: Practicing Empathy

Maria Frances Brandt, a storyteller, teacher, and writer based in Rochester, NY, begins our conversation talking about her curiosity in understanding others and herself as part of her creative process as a fiction writer.

“Writing is how I practice empathy. If I could have a superpower, it would be invisibility,” she says. “So, I could spy on everyone all the time. I’m moved by everyone. I want desperately to understand the full range of human experience.”

How do you think empathy can help reveal something new about yourself or others?
Has empathy ever led you to see a situation or person differently?

So excited to be on Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline, I totally missed it!

Prismatic Wind by Chloe Upshaw is making the rounds across the country this week! And later this month, Plasmonic Mirror will have its turn, by Sean William Calhoun!

Thank you Tyler!

On this week’s Modern Notebook with Tyler Kline: Molly Joyce’s piece Unity explores the similarities and differences between the clarinet and saxophone across two movements. It was also written to incorporate sound descriptions for the purposes of accessibility and artistry of the music.

I am OVER THE MOON excited about a successful grant from
Netherland America Foundation that gets things moving along more for The Serendipity Project!

It all started with Jacob ter Veldhuis's gorgeous piece "Serendipity" originally for violin, string quartet, and tabla...

and then Jacob made a new version for alto flute, string quartet and tabla ("Serendipity 2"), and it will be performed/recorded later this season, along with another new work by Marc Mellits...

with the wonderful wonderful Beo String Quartet and equally wonderful Thomas Nanni on tabla.

Many thanks to Netherland America Foundation for their support of this wonderful project!!!
