Meet “A Dream of Armageddon” artist, Kei Ito!

Ito is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily with photographic media, installation, and sculpture. His work addresses issues of deep intergenerational loss and connections as he explores the materiality and experimental processes of photography and artifacts.

Ito’s work, fundamentally rooted in the trauma and legacy passed down from his late grandfather – a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima - meditates on the complexity of his identity and heritage through examining the past, current trajectories, and visualizing the invisible such as radiation, memory and life/death.

Ito’s “A Dream of Armageddon” is a multimedia installation that explores potential apocalyptic disasters and serves as both a warning for the future and also a mirror of our current socio-political landscape.

The exhibition is on view in our Concourse Gallery through January 21 - be sure to come check it out!

VisArts invites applications and proposals from visual activists whose current research, curatorial or visual activist practice, and passion centers on social, racial, economic, and/or environmental justice for the 2024 Art and Social Justice Fellowship.

There is a desperate need for active re-imaginings of the future and immediate engagement with the invisibilities of the present. The economic, political, and social inequities rooted in our systems have been exposed. What can we do as artists, curators, and arts organizations to address these challenges and offer expressions of hope, solidarity, and mutual aid? How do we focus our efforts and work together for a sustainable anti-racist future that enlists creativity as an essential civic tool while staying safe and healthy? What can we do now and over the long haul within and between communities to make change?

This year-long fellowship is an opportunity to explore how thoughtfully curated art, dialogue, communication, and collaborations between artists and communities can productively navigate political flashpoints, chronic systemic inequities, and entrenched perspectives to inspire change towards a more equitable, just, and inclusive society.

For this fellowship, VisArts provides:
- Free private studio access along with a $6,000 stipend (paid over 12 months)
- An exhibition/presentation/site activation in the Common Ground Gallery
- Opportunities for public programming, workshops, teaching, and engagement with community partners, activists, and the public
- Opportunities for writing and research
- Support for development of virtual and in-person experiences for diverse audiences

Learn more and apply by November 27 at https://ow.ly/JPfJ50PWK9S. All VisArts’ calls are free.

2023 VisArts Studio Fellow Joana Stillwell’s “all the windows in my mother’s house” was reviewed in Hyperallergic! Tap the link in our bio to read the full review.

In this exhibition, Stillwell attempts to preserve the teal quality of light in her parents’ home. She also resonates on the few surviving mementos from her mother’s side of the family, along with adopted images, found objects, oral histories, home videos, and ephemeral fragments, to build a body of work that explores the tangibility and fragility of a family archive.

Meet VisArts’ 2023 Mentoring Curator, Dr. Fahamu Pecou (middle) and artists Ebon Heath (left) and Tahir Hemphill (right)!

Their exhibition, “LYRICS TO GO,” is a celebration of hip hop’s past, present, and future, highlighting its enduring influence on contemporary art and culture. It invites viewers to engage with hip hop on a deeper level, to explore its rich history, and to consider its ongoing significance in our world today. Overall, the exhibit serves as a testament to the power and enduring relevance of hip hop and its impact on the world of art.

“Ebon Heath and Tahir Hemphill both incorporate and build from writing in their respective works. Rather than merely speaking or hearing words, they use sculpture and technology to transform words into objects that expand our experience of rap music. Their works can be viewed as an evolution of the hip hop discipline of graffiti and as an original perspective of the impact of hip hop on the art world.

The conversation that emerges between these two artists, and subsequently between the works and its audience, is a powerful one that speaks to the ongoing relevance and impact of hip hop culture. Through their use of different mediums, Heath and Hemphill demonstrate the versatility and complexity of hip hop poetics, showcasing how it can be translated and reimagined in new and innovative ways.” - Dr. Fahamu Pecou

Meet “Salt Eaters” artist, Deborah Grayson!

Grayson is a Washington, DC-based fine art printmaker and painter. She uses diaries along with vernacular, ethnographic, and medical photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century as source material for building archival imaginaries to conjure different ways of telling the rich stories of Black women’s interior lives.

For Grayson, ink, graphite, wood, and paper are among the tools she finds useful to share Black women’s life stories. She does this with the intent to honor the legacies of the women who came before her.

Grayson’s “Salt Eaters” is on view in our Common Ground Gallery through October 22. Learn more about her and her work at https://ow.ly/YbQN50PScFv.
