I’ve had my head down, trying to get caught up in the gardens (but only in the mornings and evenings though-tired of this heat!), but thought I’d pop up for a sec to share what’s blooming right now!

1. ‘Tranquility’ rose just keeps going and going, even in spite of the high temps
2. Lil’ spider friend on some self-seeded rudbeckia (yay for plants I put zero effort into!)
3. Bucket of ‘Copper Boy’ dahlias
4. More rudbeckia; the colors and variations are so beautiful
5. These pansies got legs for daaaays 😍

Ok, flower stand is open! There was an abundance of blooms that were BEGGING to be made into extra lush bouquets, so that’s what’s out right now (like this smoky plummy peachy dream ☝️), but I’ll put together some standard size ones as well. Depending on how hot it feels under the tent later, I might bring everything inside around lunch-ish to keep it cool, but then I’ll have it back out around 4, when the shade returns. Check stories for updates!

Self-serve flower stand open, DM for address in South Seattle, payment via Venmo or cash.

A few weeks ago I got COVID for the first time (kinda thought I was invincible up to that point 😅), and boy oh boy it has really taken me out 😵 I’m still struggling with fatigue, and the gardens are suffering a bit because of it (thistles up to my waist! Whole crops blooming out before they could be harvested!). But! Some things have done fine with the neglect, and it makes me so happy to see them. Anyways, I’m feeling a lil’ bit stronger this week, so here’s to continued improvement! Hope to get the flower stand going again soon, but it might be a few weeks (gotta get caught up in the garden first).

Just a little FYI, there is a good chance that tomorrow will be the last chance to get tulips from the flower stand! The season was so short and fast this year, I feel like I barely had a chance to enjoy them 😭 So if you’re a fan of these spring beauties, get your butt to the stand tomorrow!

I checked through my photos from last spring, and the first rose bloomed May 11. Well, here we are with April roses! (only this one so far, but lots more on the way!). This is ‘Tranquility’, and she’s looking a little blushy this early in the season 😍

A week ago, when I was picking up my daughter from school, I noticed that there was a yard waste bin full of branches that someone had pruned from their tree right next to where I parked. They had big, fat buds on them so I obviously took a bunch of them out of the bin and put them in my car (while getting weird looks from my kid). Now I wish I had grabbed the whole bin! I guess the moral of the story is one person’s yard waste is another person’s spring treasure!

This may not look like much to most people, but I gave a huge sigh of relief when I spotted it this afternoon. That cold snap in January (and then the weird, warm and wet weather right after) turned all of the luscious, green growth on my saved ranunculus to mush. I had prepared myself to accept the fact that I had lost all of them, but now I’m seeing signs that maybe they aren’t all goners! PHEW!! Can’t wait to see their beautiful faces again in a couple of months!

Ugghhhh another rainy day. But rain now means more flowers like these later, right??

Just wanted to remind you that I have a few options for Valentines Day that don’t involve imported, carbon-heavy flowers, including dried floral wreaths, spring flower subscriptions (the gift that keeps on giving!), and flower stand gift certificates. Check out my website for more details (link in bio).

Here’s the thing. If you’re looking for a gift for someone (or to treat yourself), and you like supporting local, small businesses, take a look! So much time and care went into these dried flower wreaths, and I think they capture some of the joy and beauty of spring and summer for us to enjoy now. Most of the flowers and foliage were grown by me last year, with the rest from other local farms, and when I was sowing the seeds I put a lot of thought into what colors and varieties would complement each other (so, basically, these have been in the works for the past year! 😅). There are 3 so far, but I have 3 more in the works, so I’ll list them as I finish them. Link to the website is in my bio. Let me know if you have any questions!

Never did get around to sharing my reflections on what went really well in 2023. These were the things that fill me with a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment when I remember them. It’s still (barely) January, so it’s not too late!

1. I was thrilled when my friend Carly asked if I could do the flowers for her wedding in December. Weddings are such joyful celebrations, and it was fun to be a part of it! I’m particularly happy with how the bouquet turned out, and would love to do more small weddings in the future.

2. If you’ve been around here for a while, you might remember that I’ve struggled with growing larkspur in the past. I think I kept trying to grow it in a spot where the slug pressure was too high, and I’d end up with a bunch of munched nubbins. Well, last year I grew it in a raised bed and IT WAS MAGIC. It grew so well that I ended up with more than I could use fresh, so I dried a bunch that’ll be used for Valentine’s (stay tuned for more on that).

3 & 4. This was the third year I tried growing salpiglossis, and instead of a few meager stems here and there, everything aligned for the best crop yet (I’m combing through my notes about what exactly I did so I can grow even more this year). It’s good for me to remember that sometimes you have to try something a few times before you succeed.

Is there anything that you accomplished last year that you’re proud of? I’d love to hear it!

Next on the list of reflections for 2023 is what didn’t exactly go according to plan. I don’t like to call them failures, as I learned some really important lessons through them.

1. I went big on tulips after having success with them in 2022. However, scaling up from about 900 bulbs to 3500 was a bad idea. They were beautiful, obviously, but SO MUCH WORK. Harvesting them at just the right time, storing them, prepping and re-hydrating them for sale, etc. was just too much for this stay-at-home parent of two young kids. Add in a bit of a warm spell, and there were whole varieties of tulips that bloomed out before I could get to harvesting them (that’s ’Green Wave’ and ‘Uncle Tom’ in the pic) 😣

2. All of that time spent with the tulips in April and May meant that I wasn’t doing other gardening tasks, like getting my seedlings in the ground when they needed to be. Stuff ended up blooming way later than I planned because of the delay, and some did poorly in general, probably because they got root-bound (I’m looking at you, China Asters 👀).

3. Then, in July, I found out that I was loosing one of my garden spaces. I had to dig up and pot several roses and all of my bearded irises (luckily, it happened to be prime time for transplanting those) and find new spots for them. I ended up creating new beds for them at one of my other gardens (I still need to smother the grass and mulch around the beds ⬆️). The upside is now everyone walking by will be able to enjoy the fragrant, flamboyant beauty of those irises (I’m still looking for a spot for a lot roses, so if you’ve got empty yard space in the Columbia City/Seward Park area, HIT ME UP).

4. This maybe looks like a pic of pretty flowers, but if you could clearly see the background, you’d see a tangled mess of flopping, broken chrysanthemum plants. When I planted them, I didn’t know I’d be having major surgery * right* when they needed a lot of attention, so there’s not really anything I could have done differently, but it’s still frustrating. But! I still got lots of usable stems from them, so if I can have my s**t even a little bit together next year, it’s gonna be great!

Anyone else learn a lesson this year?

It seems like I’m not the only one who finds themselves feeling a little retrospective during this time between Christmas and New Years. Garden-wise, I find myself reflecting on what went well, what needed some tweaking, and what was a burning pile of garbage. First up, some new things that I tried! Trying new things makes me nervous, because I like to be really good at something the first time I do it (super realistic, right??). But this is how we grow (literally and figuratively)!

1- I tried drying ranunculus this spring, inspired by . I can’t remember why I have so many wonky stems, but they’ll still be perfect for this Valentine’s Day’s dried flower offerings!

2 & 3- I grew Palmer’s penstemon after seeing it on feed. It’s so beautiful! Nice and tall and fragrant too! Plus the bees loved it. Started more this fall.

4 & 5- I grew field peas as a cover crop on some new beds, with the idea that it might also work as a cut foliage. I planted it kind of late and was worried I’d have to cut it down to plant the dahlias before it had a chance to do anything, but it grew quick! It was a bit tangly, but I loved using it bouquets, both when it was flowering and maybe even more after the pods had formed.

6- and I put on a Mother’s Day flower crown workshop, and it was so much fun! I’m not normally one for standing up in front of strangers, and yes, I made Sarah do most of the actual talking, but I’m really glad I did it.

Did you try anything new this past year?

If you’re thinking about giving a Flower Stand Pass as a gift, today is the last day to order if you’d like a physical piece of paper to give to the recipient! For the flower subscriptions, I can email a PDF for you to print off and give. And a big thank you to those of you who have already ordered!

It feels kind of icky trying to sell stuff right now considering the s**t going on in the world these days. My only hope is that these offerings will be used to share love and hope with yourselves and others and shine some light in. Maybe that sounds a little ambitious for a bunch of flowers, but I’ve heard from enough of you to know it works.

Anyways, just wanted to remind you that a flower stand pass (redeemable for a regular bouquet from the flower stand) also makes an easy, thoughtful gift. Link in bio.

Oh hi! How are you all doing? Enjoying the sunshine? Just wanted to take a moment of your time to let you know that I (finally) got around to getting next year’s spring flower subscription options up on the website! (I know a couple of you have asked about them). I’ve changed a couple of things from last year as I try to find the scenario that works best for my life and my family. I think these would be a wonderful way to treat yourself or a great gift for someone you love! All subscriptions will be for pick up from my home, or delivery is available for an extra fee within a certain area of South Seattle (see website for details). Purchasing a subscription at this time of year helps me pay for off-season expenses, like bulbs, seeds and compost. Also, a lot of the fanciest, most fragrant blooms get set aside for my subscriptions, so it’s really a win-win!! Let me know if you have any questions :)

On wet, dark days like today I like to look at pictures from this earlier this year. It makes me excited for what’s coming but is also kind of torture at the same time 😂

1. Butterfly ranunculus ‘Hera’ (LOOVVVEEEE HER)
2. Pansy ‘Chianti’ (so glad I saved seeds because it seems to be suddenly hard to find)
3. Sweet pea ‘Apricot Queen’, ‘Restormel’ and some random pink one (last year I started my sweet peas in the fall but then the rabbits ate them down to little nibs, so I’ll wait till late winter this time).
4. Cosmo ‘Apricotta’ (more of these next year too!)

Hi! Hope you all had a lovely long weekend! I’m finally (hopefully) going to get around to planting my tulips this week, and this task would be waaaay less daunting if I had fewer bulbs. So! If you want to save 20% on all remaining bulbs, use code “CYBER20” at checkout! More spring beauty for you, and less work for me; it’s a win-win!
Photo is tulip ‘La Belle Epoque’ (and still in stock!)

Tulips, in all their flashy, colorful glory, made me completely forget about the other spring bulbs I have, specifically daffodils, which is a shame because these daffodils are not your usual daffodils. Some of them are fluffy, some have multiple blooms per stem, some kind of look like butterflies, and some are incredibly fragrant. Best of all, they come back every year (if you let the leaves die back on their own) and multiply over time! They’re one of the first things to bloom, and when you see them, you know spring is definitely on its way. Seriously, I love them so much.
Anyways, if I’ve managed to convince you that you need some of these special daffodils in your life, head over to my website and check them out! (Local pick-up only)

Ok! Tulip bulbs are up on my website (I’ll put the link in my bio shortly). There’s a couple of varieties missing that I’ll get up tonight, but if you’ve been thinking about planting some tulips this fall, I’d love to be your local source! I’m not shipping at this time, just local pick up only here in South Seattle.

Guess what?! All of my tulip bulbs finally arrived, plus the extras I ordered to share! I didn’t want to list them before they got here, because last year there were missing varieties and substitutions, and it was a pain to deal with. I know some of you have been asking about tulips, but I wanted to know if you’d prefer single varieties, or if mixes would be fun too! Let me know in the comments!

Thanks to everyone who came out on Saturday! I’m so glad so many flowers went home with people to be enjoyed instead of turning to mush on the bush after the frost (note to self: never say “mush on the bush” again). It’s a shame that the dahlias seemed to finally hit their stride when I was least capable of fully taking advantage of them, but I was able to cut a few here and there to enjoy.
These are Seniors Hope, Wine-Eyed Jill, and some dark red one who’s name is probably forever lost because I am someone who *thinks* that I’ll definitely remember exactly who I planted where without tagging even though that’s never panned out yet.

Ohhhh hi there, long time no see 👋 It’s been a hard 4 weeks (the doctors weren’t kidding when they said the recovery from my surgery was going to be rough, but I kind of thought I’d be like super exceptional for some reason?), but I managed to (very slowly) harvest a bunch of flowers before the frost comes to claim them tonight. That basically took all the energy I had for the day, but I still want to spread the flower love, especially with all the terrible stuff going on in the world these days, so let’s do one more flower stand tomorrow, build-your-own bouquet style! Put on a warm coat and come choose some stems that bring you joy (there’s zinnias, dahlias, chrysanthemums, sunflowers and other fun stuff!). Let’s say, 10 AM-ish? Instead of making more bouquets for today, I’m going to focus on post-surgery meal prepping and last minute gardening tasks. However, there’s still so many flowers left, so it’s your turn to play florist! Come make your own bouquet and pay whatever you think is fair! I think it’s a fun way to close out the flower stand’s third year :)

A riot of color at the flower stand today! It’s the last one of the season, and normally I would have made a bigger deal about it ahead of time, but I’ve been a little distracted by the fact that on Tuesday, surgeons will be drilling a hole in my skull in order to correct an issue that’s been causing me to hear my eyeballs move and be super sensitive to sounds for the past six months 😅 (how’s that for a run-on sentence). Anywaaaaaays, there’s a few bouquets out, and I have a fun plan for the rest of the flowers for tomorrow, so stay tuned!

My brain is saying “fall!”, but my heart is saying “not yet!” But the light feels different now, you know? Like, soon I’m going to have to accept it, right? In the meantime, thanks for sticking with me through this emo phase 😜

Anyways, came here to say that the flower stand will be open this weekend (“Weekend??” you say? Yes, I’ve arbitrarily decided that since I’m usually too tired to take the stand down Saturday night anyway, I’m just going to leave it up Sunday also. Which means more time to get flowers in your hot lil hands!).

Oh hi flower friends! The stand is open and ready! Come by and get a lovely bouquet for yourself or someone you really like (or both). After today, there’s only 2 more flower stands left for the season; if you have flower stand passes please know that you can also save them for next year too (remember the gloriousness of spring flowers?!)

Lots of color at the flower stand today! I know that there are those of you who are relishing the fact that September is here, but I personally feel like I’ve been at some really fun party and now it’s time to go home, and it always makes me kinda sad. So! There are some fall-ish themed bouquets, but also plenty of summer pastels, because I’m going to hold on as long as I can!
