From capturing those special moments on some ones wedding day to exploring the wilderness by myself and being inspired by the natural beauty of this world. Photography is my passion, but video is another powerful tool to tell stories and that’s what I love about doing both. In all my work I love that I get to tell stories and there’s real emotion and depth to someone’s wedding day. There’s a father handing off his daughter and so many other meaningful subplots in every wedding I shoot. Natural light or fill flash? I like both so I always try to give my clients as many options as time allows. In most cases the setting determines when I add fill flash. In this case the sun on the background in the first image was overpowering the couple in the shade so I added a pop of light on them. In the second image the background was shaded so I was able to capitalize on the even lighting in the frame and keep it natural.

S&E’s lakeside photo shoot before their wedding at was a special one. The normal wind on Lake Tahoe can certainly create some fun and magical images, but the stillness of the air and water on this day was pure bliss.

Weddings at Highcamp offer an unparalleled mountain top experience. The views come at a small cost, however, and that is the winds that are typically present. A little bit of wind is not anything to worry about, but it can be a challenge for those family formal photos. I recommend planning to schedule those at the bottom of the mountain either before the ceremony if your reception is scheduled up top, or possibly after the ceremony if your reception is at the bottom.

Loved this engagement photo shoot with R&A. I had the pleasure of capturing their proposal in the Spring and their actual engagement photos in the Fall.
What’s my favorite time of year for portrait photos?
October - Mid November.
Why?
1. Light. The sun is at a lower angle throughout the day giving more flattering light throughout the day.
2. Slightly less crowds (although we don’t really have a shoulder season in Tahoe anymore).

A complex web of lies was required to carry out this surprise proposal. A 3 year long distance relationship that stretched from the U.S. east coast to Australia met here, unbeknownst to her. As she walked out to the pier, bummed that a random guy was in her photo, she blinked in unbelief as she realized that random guy out there was her man with her dream engagement ring and a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

True love.
I’m diggin this unique perspective at a tried and true location. I always enjoy at years end, or more typically the years beginning, going through the last years photos. There are so many good ones that I appreciate in a fresh way after not seeing it for 6-8months. In fact, that’s typically why the photos I share are not taken recently but are actually images from the previous season. I guess I’m a little weird like that… like an insecure artist that doesn’t want to share immediately because I’m not convinced I love it and don’t know what to say about it. Going back through the years photos leaves me appreciative and humbled by all the cool people that let me capture their big days. Truly an honor.

Our Story

CJ Varela founded Divided Line Photo in 2013 and since then he has photographed more than 300 weddings as well as other special events and portrait sessions.

Divided Line Photo offers competitive wedding photography prices for a service and finished product above the rest.

From CJ: "I started taking photos more seriously after my daughter was born in 2011. I would lay on the floor and try to get her to crawl to me, and once she was a couple years old I had chase her around to get a compelling image of her. It didn't take long for her to get sick of dealing with my photo requests and since then I've had to find other subjects, haha. But in all seriousness, that training really worked and I never thought my hobby and love for capturing timeless moments would lead me to this point. I'm so thankful and honored to be able capture memories that people will cherish forever. Weddings are so rich with anticipation and emotion, and the covenantal vows really transcend (in terms of importance) just about anything else we choose to do throughout our life. Marriage is special and I love being able to use my gift to photograph them."

CJ's photography style would be classified as 'classic' and 'photojournalistic'. His main priority is to maintain a fun atmosphere on any photoshoot because good photos are always the result of fun times. CJ likes to keep things light during formal photos by using his sense of humor and sometimes sarcasm to help people relax and enjoy the experience -- and it really works to set people at ease.
