St. Louis Dancing Classrooms Transforming lives one dance step at a time. St. Louis metropolitan area schools. Louis metropolitan area. Our History
St. Louis is one of them!

Louis Dancing Classrooms (SLDC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit social development program aimed at empowering youth, teaching respectful interaction, and promoting teamwork in St. Using the New York-based Dancing Classrooms program (portrayed in Mad Hot Ballroom and currently engaging 40,000 children each year) as a model, SLDC partners with fifth grade classrooms; our ultimate goal is make this opportun

ity available to every fifth grader in the St. Residency Program
Our program consists of a 10 week, 20 session curriculum where students learn 6 ballroom dances culminating in a performance in front of the entire school, parents, and community members. For more information, please email us at [email protected] or call us at 314.435.5878. The residency occurs during the school day with fifth grade students. Each school has an option to participate in a city-wide competition, the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match, after successful completion of the residency. Louis Dancing Classrooms, founded in 2008 by two community members who where looking for a novel way to empower youth in St. Louis, was fortunate to attract additional core members and several key community advisers early in its existence. Thank you to all those individuals and organizations who continue to help us as we strive to make this vision a reality. The Dancing Classrooms curriculum is the result of the decades-long work of acclaimed dancer and teacher Pierre Dulaine of the American Ballroom Theater in New York City. The method has evolved over years of interaction with students, and is specifically designed to engage students of varying backgrounds and skills. Over ten weeks of fun and learning, students begin to function with a heightened sense of respect for self and others, responsibility, and community. Dancing Classroom programs currently exist in seventeen cities across the United States and World...and St. Last year, the program served over 40,000 students, and continues to grow steadily. Widespread exposure came to the Dancing Classrooms program with the release of the 2005 documentary, Mad Hot Ballroom, and 2006 motion picture starring Antonio Banderas, Take the Lead - both based on this program.

Our TAs are trained to create havens in which all feelings and expressions of individuality are not only welcomed, but encouraged. This establishes a sense of safety, which inspires students to bravely approach various dance modalities and explore collaborative teamwork skills.

This Black History Month, Dancing Classrooms St. Louis would like to acknowledge African American dancers who have paved the way for other ballroom dancers. In the 1930s and 1940s, Margot Webb and Harold Norton became known by the name “Norton and Margot.” In this time period, it was uncommon for African American dancers to perform styles like Tango and Waltz.
