If you need a safe place to take a break, or if you just need to be surrounded by thousands of books to escape into, we are here for you.

Today, tomorrow, ad infinitum.

Left Bank Books has been around a long time. We were founded in 1969, the same year the Stonewall Riots happened and the modern fight for q***r rights started gaining national momentum. Left Bank is a part of St. Louis history, a part of q***r history, and a part of so many of the liberation movements over the past 55 years. We’ve been through and seen so much tragedy, grief, protest, and movement towards the eternal fight for human rights.

And we continue to survive.

We won’t pretend that it will be easy; there will be losses like today, and we will all face our fair share of heaviness…

But we’ll do it together. Because through the grief, the struggles, the weight of it all, we are first and foremost a community that cares for one another. We still have love for each other and the space & care to support one another. We are resilient and will find our liberation in the communities we build and sustain together.

Let’s celebrate every small victory: we protected abortion rights and we raised the minimum wage, and along the way we bolstered some workers’ rights. So, take a beat. We all need rest and recovery, and this bookstore will be here to support you when you find your footing again.

We survive through the stories we tell one another.

The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates has been out for just a week, and is already causing a commotion. Called insightful and poignant by some, and attacked for humanizing the people of Palestine by others.

Please take a moment to check out this post on to see Coates deftly challenge his critics.

“Ever since his Baldwin-inflected Between the World and Me, Coates has been known for his incisive (and sometimes uncomfortable) cultural and political commentary. Here he journeys from West Africa to the American South to Palestine to examine how the stories we tell can fail us, and to argue that only the truth can bring justice.”—The Boston Globe
