Throughout 2022 I wasn't sure I was going to continue with my photography -- I was having some dark times, continually telling myself the ridiculous story that my work was no longer desired and that I should just move on.

But every once in awhile, through those dark clouds -- a light would shine down and I'd feel the glow on my face reminding me why I love what I do.

And the truth is -- people do love my work.

Sometimes I'm reminded when a client takes time out of their day to describe to me what my photography has done for them. How much they cherish the moments I capture. Other times, someone leaves us earthside with that palpable craving to rewind time and pause the moments they laughed inside of my camera.

Both remind me how important this craft is, and that people not only love it -- but they need it as well.

Sometimes life just comes full circle.

Lannie and I would rock out to Lisa Loeb and eat Kraft macaroni & cheese while she babysat me as a youngster. We had so many fun nights together and she was always one of my favorite babysitters.

Fast forward to this past weekend when I got to document her becoming one of the most beautiful brides I've seen.

With Mercury going retrograde and a full moon in the sky, I watched her elegantly dodge and leap over each and every mishap that occurred on her wedding day. Swollen eyes. Missing cakes. Scheduling mishaps and delays. Nothing was going to stop her from marrying her man -- and nothing did.

In the end it was the simple, love filled gathering they'd hoped for and I'm so blessed and happy that she chose me to capture it.

Posting about cake smashes earlier made me feel super nostalgic about my youngest turning one this past fall.

I'm just so in love with these images.

There's no better subject matter for a day in the life shoot. Period. I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Actually. No I won't -- but it IS a hill that I am willing to die on.

There is something magic in the air when a child celebrates their first trip around the sun -- and that first taste of sugar just "hits different."

Kind of like the new SRW Joyce Photography cake smashes hit a little different.

A little more organic.

I love nothing more than plunking a baby down in the middle of their table with a treat and surrounding them with their favorite folks. No pressure. Just exploration. Real memories being made surrounded by their favorite people.

This post feels like me crawling out from under a rock of some sort

::gulp::

So. Yeah. Hey everyone.

It has been a rough few years -- and to be honest? I've been hiding. Shutting away the weird world and reassessing all of my life's choices. I wasn't sure that photography was my calling anymore, but I also wasn't sure I could survive and pay bills without it.

I've been inaccessible to many during this process and I just realized that I although I had written an away message disclaimer of genius, I ultimately failed to activate it and therefore have just sort of "ghosted" everyone with radio silence.

I'm sorry.

I'm having a crisis of faith and I just can't help but feel like I've been "doing it wrong." Not only in terms of running my business but also my style and approach to photography in general.

To be honest -- I've experienced a lot of loss in my lifetime. Death is not a stranger to me. People slip right through our fingers like sand in an hourglass.

What I do for a living is actually my desperate attempt to catch them.

We have been gifted the ability to capture the light surrounding a person in a little box and turn it into artwork -- a beautiful return ticket to a moment that's passed us by. I mean think about that. Wow. That is such an amazing gift. It sounds like f*cking magic but truthfully and scientifically that is my job.

So why am I so often wasting it on pretend moments?

From now on, I just want to be a fly on the wall and capture the beauty of your life-- your REAL life. Including the messy authentic hidden moments.

Because I bet you one million dollars, they're freaking beautiful.

And someday when your children are all grown up, they'll see these images and remember those days. They'll be able to hear the laughter and smell the carpet. And THEN someday far in the future your great great great great great great grandchildren will peer at these albums and transport right into your home; feeling like they know you somehow.

What a gift. What a glorious gift.

We're all just time travelers, creating the keepsakes of tomorrow.

Meet Marley John.

This little guy is absolutely the sweetest thing to have come out of the kitchen over at Peace, Love, and Cupcakes in Downtown Syracuse 💖✨ he was baked to perfection, sprinkled with love, and is now just too delicious for words!!

Fans of the bakery are counting down the minutes until they re-open — so until then, here’s a sneak peek of the sweetness happening behind the scenes.

Taylor & Kara.

I've known Taylor since he was a born -- he has sat in my livingroom as a toddler (with a headful of curls) playing a plastic guitar at 2 years old.

He grew up (and so did I) and before long, he became a barber -- joining me again to shave heads and beards at my St. Baldrick's event where I shed my locks. Now he's gotten married and I'm so honored and happy to have been a part of this sweet couple's big day.

It's been a wild ride since meeting them with battling covid restrictions and date changes -- but oh my, they ended up with a wildly gorgeous day surrounded by family and friends who love them. The Red Barn in Cazenovia is STUNNING. All the vendors were AMAZING. Food. Floral. Venue. Jams. All of it was on point.
