Capoeira was born out of an oppressed people’s struggle for freedom. Inclusion is at the core of capoeira since it originated among socially excluded peoples. Throughout its history, capoeira has always been associated with people excluded from mainstream society, yet who never ceased their struggle to affirm their rights, identity, and cultural values. For this reason, capoeira has enormous poten
tial for inclusion that transcends gender, class, race, and ethnic divisions. Men and women of all nationalities, ages, faiths, and cultural backgrounds and income levels are brought together through the practice of capoeira and the quest to learn more about other peoples. To the iconic music of capoeira and the dynamic movements, they are all citizens of the world striving to improve the quality of life and bring about social justice by having positive experiences with others. The Tucson Capoeira Club, U of A is devoted to the understanding and practice of the Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira. We practice the Regional style. Our mission includes promoting and demonstrating the great benefits this art has to offer.
