ARTIST: JAN ANDRE RAATS from Knysna
" White-on-White” Lockdown. A blank page
Butterflies. Recycled plastic water bottles. Sustainable. The growing urgency to protect our natural heritage.
Aesthetic bands of equal width, alternate matt and gloss white, taking inspiration from the American Abstract Minimalist Painter, Agnes Martin. My painting technique of using my fingers, as much part of the imperfections that characterises Agnes Martin’s work.
Butterflies in each band subtly different, in texture, light reflection and tonal value, selected from a different part of the plastic water bottle.

Oil on newsprint and canvas 100cmx150cm
For the woman, enraptured in the painting at the Zeitz MOCAA, I took inspiration from Kentridge depiction of figures in black and white. Outside. Yet, within the composition.
Action Ads newsprint over oil paint. Not sure if it will remain on the canvas as the paint dries? A touch of red in the under painting. A selection of Kendtridge’s use of red, adding drama to the composition. I looked for aspects that highlighted the Coved-19, Knysna reality, while still capturing the essence of William Kentridge.

We want to create a collection of the pandemic in the museum archives.
Videos, photographs, stories and art are incredible resource in recording the impact of the Covid - 19 in our society.
