PRIDE –NOT: PROUD – NOT This series of images explore the pride or rather lack of that still exists within us when dealing with issues on African tradition and rituals. Certain African rituals and traditions have progressively been viewed negatively with a sense of darkness associated to these post arrival of the missionaries and embracing the western culture. There seems to be a sense of shame and embarrassment amongst the native Africans to engage and share these experiences, irrespective of whether one’s experience yields a positive or negative result. It is interesting to observe the impact and the manner in which the western culture has taken over the traditional ways of dealing with issues of health and spirituality in a home space; doing facials at a spa, steaming at the gym and ukuqguma in a private space. These methods of cleansing the skin may entail use of similar plant extracts, oils and ointments however sharing the later experience (ukuqguma) may seem unsettling to others and often carry judgmental commentary. This is just one example of how the pride associated with the African culture is questioned with the adoption of the western way of living.
