The 2024 Vitis Vinifera Awards took place in the first week of September at the iconic Lanzerac Hotel and Spa. A panel of esteemed judges, including several Cape Wine Masters, spirits experts, and sommeliers, evaluated South Africa’s best wines and spirits.

Did you know that Shiraz is the second most widely planted red grape variety in South Africa after Cabernet Sauvignon? 🍇 🍷

Originating from the city of Shiraz in Iran, the grapes made their way to the Rhone region of France before finding their way to South Africa. In 1957, Bernard Podlashuk, also known as “The Father of Shiraz in South Africa,” was the first to bottle Shiraz as a single cultivar under the Bellingham label. The Shiraz trend really took off in the early 1990s, and by 2009, vineyards had expanded to about 10,000 hectares! 🍷

Fun fact: Shiraz is not only celebrated for its rich flavour and spicy aromatics but also for its health benefits. Today, it is believed to be one of the healthiest wine varietals.

Monogram Collection Shiraz

The Monogram Collection Shiraz is the top end of the range. It sets itself apart from the Foothills Syrah due to the use of only new oak for 14 months. The wine offers a savoury flavour profile with notes of Belgian chocolate, black plums, cherries, cigar box, espresso, and liquorice, adding richness and complexity. It is succulent and smooth on the palate, without harsh edges, and has a sleek and streamlined character. The gentle grip at the end gives it great versatility as a food wine, as well as ageing potential.

We had our July Wine Club dinner last week on the estate and it was nothing short of an spectacular event. We teamed up with Davide from . Davide joined in with he’s team making the most amazing Fior Di Latte Mozzarella. This is a semi-soft, fresh cheese made in the style of Italian mozzarella. We paired our wines with some of he’s Italian dishes and finished off the evening with Straw Wine dunked chocolate brownies. Thanks for all that joined in on this wonderful evening and looking forward to our next meet up.

Dear Tim we were never ready to say Goodbye to you and we will all miss you dearly here on the farm. You have taught us many beautiful life lessons and your courageous and fighting spirit will be forever remembered. I heard the fish eagles this morning on the farm and saw them circling above your home across the dam. This is a gentle reminder Tim, that you will forever be here on the farm.
