Windfall Flowers

Windfall Flowers Zinnia breeder and seed grower in BC, Canada.

These are my Windfall Peach zinnias in a “flysolation”. A flysolation is an isolation tunnel covered in bee netting, that keeps flies inside. The flies pollinate the flowers, so that I don’t have to do it by hand!

If you are interested in learning more about flysolations check out Blomma Flower Farm and Floret. Both are amazing zinnia breeders.

My son called number 5 “Cotton Candy”.

Naming my zinnias is the hardest part for me, so that name will probably stick!

As always, I’d love to hear which are your favorites.

Pale pinks 🌸

These are from some hand pollinated crosses I made last summer and I’m so happy with what they became! The “pollen parent” was a beautiful soft colour but had a terrible form. I took the risk and used it to pollinate some flowers with better forms and this was the result!

I have been getting lots of questions about when our zinnia seeds will be available again, so I thought I’d post the link for anyone that is interested in signing up for the email newsletter - this is the best way to hear when the date is set for the seed sale this fall (tentatively scheduled for November).

I can’t thank everyone enough for all of the interest and support! It’s so amazing to connect with so many others that share a love of zinnias 😊

Which colour pallet would you grow more of? And do you grow as a home gardener or as a farmer/florist?

Your input really helps me to tailor my seed offerings to what you want!

So many of you let me know that you loved the colour of the huge buttercream zinnia I posted in my stories yesterday (the first flower in this photo series). Thank you! I love getting your input.

That soft buttery yellow is something I’m working on breeding… Here are a few more zinnias from the breeding program in the same colour, but different shapes.

Let me know which shape is your favorite in this buttercream colour! Your input helps shape the direction I take my breeding program 💕

A look at some of my indoor breeding zinnias. I started these mid-February and they are now blooming and ready for pollination! They will produce seeds in time to plant out this summer.

Zinnias grown indoors always look a little different than if they were grown outdoors (they are never as spectacular when grown indoors). But you can still get a good idea of what sort of genes they have, and I think some of these are looking pretty good!

The last slide shows a flower with the typical petal shape and arrangement that I see a lot of in my flowers (top), alongside a flower with a petal type that I haven’t seen before in my flowers (shorter and spikier). This is what makes breeding so interesting- New traits can seemingly pop out of nowhere!

Zinnias in January ❄️ they aren’t nearly as big and beautiful and healthy as when they are growing outdoors in the summer, but it’s still nice having a few flowers around this time of year!

These are cuttings from plants that were growing outside this past summer, that are now growing under lights indoors. If I can keep them alive until spring 🤞 I will have clones of some of my favourite flowers from last year, growing again this year!

I am also cross pollinating these by hand, to create even more new crosses to grow this summer (I can’t stop) 😂

Are you growing zinnias indoors right now??? Cause you should be!

Thank you!! I am overjoyed and overwhelmed by the amount of support I’ve received from all of you- Not only through the seed sale (which was an amazing success!!) but also by all of the positive and encouraging comments, messages, and shares I’ve received. Flower people build the best communities!

I am so excited to continue this journey and to see where the next year takes me and my zinnias. I might be even more excited to see them blooming all over the country, and to see what you all discover!

Although my more limited varieties sold out quickly, I have some stock left of the mix and Peach. I will be closing down the shop by the end of the week.

Thank you 💕

The seed shop is now open to all!

Windfall Apricot and Lilac were my most limited available varieties and also the most popular! These two sold out on opening day to newsletter subscribers (thank you!!), but there is still some Peach, Coral and Mix left!

Zinnia germination rates are looking good!

I try hard to include only the healthiest seeds in my seed packets based on how they look, but germination tests are needed in order to know for sure if the seeds are viable. I’m very happy to report that the seeds grown this season are showing great germination rates, and this brings me one step closer to opening the seed shop! (Soon I promise!)

Seed sale input wanted!

The pale pink double flowers in these photos are the first generation of offspring (f1) from a cross that I did last winter. I planted about 50 seeds from that cross and I was surprised to see that they all produced the same type of flower! No variation! This is one of my very favourite discoveries from this season, and of course I bagged and hand pollinated many of these flowers to produce seed for my breeding program, but I was also able to collect enough open pollinated seeds to share!

Genetics can be very complicated and I won’t know what the next generation of flowers will look look like until we grow them- I love this part of breeding- the element of surprise and discovery! I expect that a percentage of the next generation’s flowers will be the same as these f1 plants, some will be the same as the original parent plants, and some will be exciting new surprises. By growing these seeds you would get the experience of being a zinnia breeder without having to do the initial cross yourself!

Let me know in the comments if you would be interested in these seeds. If there is enough interest I may include them in the upcoming sale!

Phew! My growing season is finally over. All of my isolated flower heads have been cut, and all of the other zinnia seeds have been harvested. Now on to the seed cleaning - which might be an even bigger job than the seed growing!

Wow, this is a crazy one! Too crazy? Probably. Should I take cuttings and overwinter it? Also probably.
