Throwback to The Music Man Jr (2019), when we brought in a music teacher to teach some of the students how to play their characters’ instruments! If you saw the show, you’ll remember that the kids played these instruments on stage after just a couple instructional sessions 🎶🎺👏🏻

During the Summer Youth Conservatory, our students not only stage and perform a musical but also get to participate in workshops and classes. In the past, students have done workshops in stage combat, acro, improv, voice and diction, tap, hip hop, and more!!

Fun fact: fresh popcorn was made each night for onstage use in 13 the Musical! Because so much popcorn was spilled (on purpose) during the movie theatre scene, we had to send one of our backstage helpers onstage in costume with a broom to sweep it up! 🤣

How cool is this? Actor Gabriel Labelle, who plays a leading role in the OSCAR-NOMINATED movie The Fabelmans (directed by Steven Spielberg) got his start •right here• with the Youth Conservatory! He took the stage in our 2015 production of Shrek Jr. as Lord Farquaad. 👏🏻 Our program director Kimberly Markarian tells us that “Gabe was a fun and imaginative student, loved by all his castmates”. We’re thrilled to see Gabriel’s success - from Duloc to Hollywood!

We are half way to our goal....this fund will go directly to students in financial need to attend our Summer Kay Meek Youth Conservatory. The West Vancouver Foundation believes in a future that is bright, just and sustainable with the resources to ensure a vibrant quality of life for generations to come. They are a leader in community-based philanthropy, working with individuals, families and charities for maximum community impact.

This year in their Give Where You Live campaign, an exciting giving campaign that empowers you to join others in supporting a select group of local charities, have chosen to work with the Kay Meek Arts Centre in support of our 2023 Youth Conservatory. When you make a donation to our program, through their donation portal, your donation will be matched - doubling your giving!

*Donations made by December 31, 2022 will be matched up to $5,000, by funds held at West Vancouver Foundation.

ABOUT CONSERVATORY
The Kay Meek Summer Youth Conservatory Program is an annual musical theatre intensive for youth from the age of 8 to 18. Working closely with program instructors and industry professionals, students are introduced to all aspects of the theatre craft and participate in the building of an entire production. This upcoming summer the conservatory will be producing Frozen Junior, and Into the Woods Junior.

The Youth Conservatory has been running, through the Kay Meek Arts Centre, for the last 12 years. The program has grown and developed over this last decade into two strong programs that provide the opportunity for aspiring young actors to explore their craft and hone their skills in acting, dancing, and singing. Every summer the Kay Meek Art Centre provides families with financial need bursaries to make it possible for them to participate in our musical theatre intensive programs. Last year we funded over $7500.00 in Bursaries! This fundraising campaign will help provide more bursaries and cover the rising costs of our program. This will enable even more students to participate in the program, and have the incredible memories and experiences that hundreds of local students and aspiring actors have had over the last decade. This time of year you will always find me, Youth Conservatory Program Director: Kimberly (Webb) Markarian, in the Grosvenor theatre prepping for our Senior Youth Conservatory Production! This is the culmination of every year for me as a producer/teacher...working on building their skills in dance & movement, voice/ text work, and their communication of character and thought....Just like when I started in 1986! (Lower right hand photo, and middle one on the left). 📷 St. Albert Children's Theatre

Find me as a sweet 14 year old in my first musical: Two Gentlemen of Verona, at St. Albert Children's Theatre, ironically a rock musical! After this I went off into the classical world...because when I opened my mouth opera fell out, but now I work in both worlds and cross train all my young actors to create in all styles. The wonderful childhood memories of my friends, my first onstage kiss, and my amazing mentor and teacher: Kim Mattice Wanat. The trajectory of my life from this point on changed!

Come watch our production this coming Friday and Saturday at the Kay Meek Arts Centre 7:30pm. The cast is small but mighty! Come witness the culmination of four weeks of hard work, growth as artists, and amazing team work by cast and crew!

Our Senior Conservatory students had the amazing opportunity to chat with .amandus via Zoom yesterday! Cameron is currently working as a Swing in on Broadway and had so much wonderful advice to share with our students about the performing arts. Thank you Cameron!!! ♥️🌟

We’re so excited to introduce a new face to our program staff this year - our amazing intimacy director Julie Murphy! Julie (along with her assistant Raquel, who we’ll introduce in another post) gave 2 amazing workshops to our students and worked with each production on the intimacy and fight choreo that you see in our shows. Thank you Julie and Raquel!!
