Roots Catering Kitchen is an outside catering company serving yummy and exciting brekkies and lunches, smoothies, juices and cakes (and a whole bunch of other stuff) to the marvellous people of Edinburgh. The values of Sustainability, Well-being and Community are super-important to the Roots gang, and are core to everything we think, make and do. Most (but not all!!) the dishes we prepare are vege

tarian and vegan, but we make a huge effort to ensure that omni-eaters will also love these dishes. The meat, fish, dairy, eggs and honey that we also use, come only from suppliers who can guarantee that they have produced or sourced their products responsibly. We reuse, reduce, recycle, upcycle and compost, and we are working really, really hard to achieve zero waste. The Roots team believes that nutrition is hugely important to our well-being - physical, mental and emotional, and prepare loads of healthy, balanced dishes, to help everyone be the best that they can be. We also know that sweet treats are important, so we make them little (and scrummy). The well-being and fair treatment of our team is core to everything we believe: we provide great working conditions, and a happy, huggy, wholesome and balanced working environment.

We’ve been a bit quiet on social media the last few months as we’ve had a lot going on, but we do plan do get back to posting pictures of yummy food again soon.

In the meantime, however, I’d like to share a wee challenge that I’m taking on to raise funds for the incredible charity Sands, the stillbirth & neonatal death charity, who support bereaved families and work incredibly hard to save babies’ lives.

Each year in May, they create a challenge to swim 5k to raise sponsorship funds. I’m a fairly strong swimmer, so have decided to try to complete 50k instead. The real challenge for me will be time- between being full time in the business, studying, being a mum to Emeline (and Dougal), I could already do with another 10 hours each day, but with your help, I plan to overcome this challenge to raise some vital funds. Mark will be cheering me on, and taking care of everything else, as always!!

I have already started my challenge a bit early as I’ve got mega events and deadlines towards the end of May, but I hope people won’t mind that.

If anyone has a spare quid or two, please consider donating to this very special organisation. And wish me luck! πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

Our chums at on William Street are opening for one special Saturday in aid of - Saturday 11 May from 12-2:30pm.

They’ll be serving smash burgers, chips and milkshakes using Fox and Co’s finest ingredients. πŸ” 🍟

Payment will be by donation only (either cash or card) and all proceeds will be going directly to the Charity.

For the Fox Mac combo and milkshake, we are suggesting a minimum donation of Β£10 πŸ’°

They will also be selling strips of raffle tickets for Β£5 each, or individual tickets for Β£1 each, to win a pair of Sennheiser Bluetooth earbuds, a cut and blow dry from , plus more to come.

Ronald McDonald House Charities UK is an independent charity that provides free β€œhome away from home” accommodation for families when they have a child receiving care or treatment in hospital. They believe that families are stronger when they can stay together and close to their child’s bedside, whether that’s for a few nights or many months.

Of the 14 Houses run by RMHC UK, the Ronald McDonald House Edinburgh is the newest. It opened in March 2021 and has welcomed over 1,700 families through its doors from across Scotland and beyond - families who are often far from home and their local support networks.

Alongside 25 ensuite family bedrooms, the House provides communal kitchen and dining spaces, a bright family lounge, a fully equipped playroom and laundry facilities, and they never miss an opportunity to celebrate a holiday, birthday, or special occasion, going above and beyond to ensure people feel at home.

During the pop up lunch there will be no dietary substitutes and they may shut earlier if supplies run out before the allotted time. Come on down and enjoy some delicious food all while learning about and supporting a good cause ❀️

PS - if you know anyone who would like to donate prizes to the raffle or could put a poster up to publicise the event and the charity then please message and we will put you in touch with Julia who is organizing the event.

Lots of you already know the Steps to Hope SCIO charity, an Edinburgh-based organisation which supports people facing homelessness and / or suffering from addiction. They’re a brilliant charity and have achieved some incredible things in just a few years.

Our great pal Richard, the charity’s founder, is currently undertaking the most immense challenge- sleeping rough for 8 weeks, in 8 different UK cities, in order to raise funds for, and awareness of, both the charity and the plight of those suffering.

He’s currently starting week 7, so has slept out over Christmas and New Year, meaning that he was away from his lovely fiancΓ©e, and his children. The conditions, as you can imagine, have been brutal in freezing temperatures.

It’s been hard to watch Richie over the weeks as you can see how hard it is to take on this mammoth project, and the toll that it’s taking on him, but he keeps telling everyone how lucky he is, as he knows he gets to go home at the end of the 8 weeks. He’s really an inspiration, and so committed to helping others.

Incredibly, over Β£140,000 has already been raised, which is extraordinary, but so much more is needed. So, I thought, imagine if just 25% of our FB followers donated even just Β£5 each, it would a massive Β£4.5k to the total. I’ve put the JustGiving link below for anyone who feels able to contribute, but if some of you would share this post, it would give it a boost so that more people see it, and hopefully we can help this superb organisation continue to do amazing things.

For anyone else, please just give their FB page a wee follow (link in comments) as all exposure is hugely important for them.

Thank you x

Hello!

We’re selling a fabby large stock pot (used once) and a chest freezer, both in great condition and offered for a brilliant price.

Also GIVING AWAY (very reluctantly) a fully working refrigerated salad bar, for which we paid Β£3000+, as apparently it isn’t selling. Any suggestions for an organisation that can benefit from this? It’s pretty big!

Please tag anyone you think may be interested!

We are selling our lovely refrigerated salad bar that we used in the shop for just under two years before we closed. So far, we’ve had five β€œguaranteed buyers” all of whom have been total time wasters.

It had a full service after the first 12 months of use and has been stored in our friend’s business space for the last year. It’s still in brilliant condition but will need an up-to-date PAT test and potentially a gas top-up.

We bought it for just under Β£3000 but are totally open to all offers as we cannot keep storing it in our friend’s space as we never imagined storing it there for so long.

Does anyone know of anyone who may be interested? Cafe? Restaurant? B&B? Shop? Deli? Bar? Please share with anyone you think may be interested.

Feel free to pass on our number to send a WhatsApp 07432 220 150. ☺️

You have probably read about the horrendous incident in Baberton that happened last night, in which one man devastatingly lost his life.

One of the properties which has been completely destroyed belongs to Stephanie, one of the incredible team members from Citidogs, and her partner, who were thankfully rescued, but have lost their home and all of their possessions.

A fundraiser has been set up to try to support them through this terrible time, while they recover in hospital and for the immediate future. For any of you who may wish to donate, the link is below.

Our Story

Welcome to Roots Salad Bar and Caterer, serving yummy and exciting brekkies and lunches, smoothies, juices and coffees (and a whole bunch of other stuff) to the marvellous people of Edinburgh, from its cosy spot on the lovely William Street in Edinburgh’s West End, as well as outside catering for offices, parties, conferences, retreats, and everything in between. The values of Sustainability, Well-being and Community are super-important to the Roots gang, and are core to everything we think, make and do. With every decision we make, these values guide and positively direct our actions. Sustainability is more than just a word we throw around. We reuse, reduce, recycle, upcycle and compost, and we are working really, really hard to achieve zero waste. We do not use or stock any single-use plastic as a business. We work with the mighty Vegware and London Bio Packaging to ensure all our bits and pieces are compostable. Thanks to our partners in waste management, we send nothing (zero, nil, nada) to landfill. Most (not all, but most!) of what we make is vegetarian, (and mostly vegan), but we make a huge effort to ensure that omni-eaters will also love these dishes. The meat, fish, dairy and eggs that we use, come only from suppliers who can guarantee that they have produced or sourced their products responsibly. We are not perfect, but we constantly strive to improve. The Roots team believes that nutrition is hugely important to our well-being - physical, mental and emotional, and so we prepare loads of healthy, balanced dishes, to help everyone be the best that they can be. We understand that sweet treats are important, so we make them little (and scrummy). The well-being and fair treatment of our team is core to everything we believe: we provide great working conditions and a happy, huggy, wholesome and balanced working environment. This extends to our community work and support. We have already built amazing relationships with some fabby organisations, including the amazing Grassmarket Community Project, FareShare and The Rock Trust (please look these guys up if you don’t know them! They do amazing work) At Roots, we welcome children and doggies** and have special goodies for both. Our pup, Dougal, loves to welcome furry (and non-furry) friends to hang out with him. We have high-chairs, a dog blanket, baby-changing, toddler step, doggy bowls, a doggy-ball pit and chewy things, and spare nappies and baby wipes, a free cuddling service.......

For those of you who aren’t able to stop by, we still provide our Roots catering service, both for the workplace and for special events. Please drop us an email to [email protected] for some more info. We are jumping up and down with excitement, in anticipation of meeting you all, and sharing some delish Roots’ goodies and banter. See you soon! Catriona, Mark, Dougal and all of team Roots ### **apparently it’s necessary to have an adult human attached, according to some important people who make such rules.
