It’s that time of year when poppies are popping up everywhere. These tall annual o***m poppies were so tall and got battered by the wind laying flat on the ground they had to be pulled out - I stuck them in some large pickle jars as even though their flowers are short lived, the petals are so beautiful and the foliage is glossy silver, didn’t have the heart to put them on the compost.. will check tomorrow to see how they survived the week..

Roses and the structure underneath that makes them bloom so much more abundantly - scroll through the summer/winter rose garden with rose domes, teepees that makes for beautiful winter structures that completely disappear underneath all that growth in summer!

This table is home to the soft pale palette - always a favourite with visitors. Another example on how to match your flowers with your vases and candles and keep within that palette, proved to be so much more effective and easier to pick to restricted colours when you’re spoiled for choice in June 😁 A selection of vases at different heights creates a lovely dynamic tablescape 👌🏻 so beautiful but notoriously difficult to photograph set against that big window..

Love this colour combo for table flowers in bud vases. Cosmos, sweetpeas, cornflowers, linaria, and the best for the relaxed dangly bits Echium, a low growing bedding variety. Naturally match vase colour to flower palette of course 👌🏻 and you’re done

This little Muscari Valerie Finnis flowers and marks the proper start of spring for me around my son’s birthday. They somehow find their way into arrangements here and there as they are excellent scented cut flowers or shall I call them pulled stems instead - instead of cutting if you pull the stems carefully but firmly away from their bulb when picking, the stem length is actually decent size and long enough for small bouquets and all sorts of smaller flower decorations like buttonholes, flower crowns or bud vases. I just finished a small bridal order using these and other local spring flowers and foliages from my small plot this time - I often worry if I have enough choice without sourcing from elsewhere but even so I managed to pick 15 different ingredients for this order from my very small plot and garden. It doesn’t get much more sustainable and seasonal than using what’s available locally 🪻🪻🪻photo credits

I always do a little walking down the aisle demo before handing over the bouquet to my brides - a little suggestion about how and where to hold the flowers as they tend to have a back and a front and Aneka here completely rocked it 💫 photos by thank you X

Party tables in a long barn style set up where we used tons of eucalyptus loosely laid along the centre of the tables to create a scented foliage runner that is also easy to place sharing plates on or move if need to for glasses, bottles etc. a quick, practical, cost effective way of making an impact and create a tablescape that lasts fantastically out of water for days - which after the party was bunched and given away to guests to take home and enjoy, as when naturally dried in a vase eucalyptus will keep its colour and form for years 💙 you might say eucalyptus isn’t native to the UK but its incredibly adaptable with its hundreds of varieties there is one for every corner of the earth - its grown in the UK for cutting and plenty of hardy varieties to choose from. When the eucalyptus gets cut back and allowed to regrow from early summer to autumn the plants get a rest before the cutting season starts again. Photography by thank you X

The annual festive porch at one of my favourite gardens is now decorated - this year we kept it very natural using only abundant hedgerow pickings aka mostly holly as it’s so rich in berries this year. Wreath made with less prickly stems of yew, cypress, hazel catkins, on willow wreath base all from the fields, later fully compostable. Hopefully the birds leave enough berries on there in the next few weeks 🤞🏻

Garden gathered large wreath with pittosporum, elaeagnus, yew, rosemary, ivy and holly on a willow wreath base fixed with just natural twine - we now do without moss and wire entirely, completely compostable, though will probably keep the willow wreath base for more wreathing next year ☝🏻 What’s not to like? 😊

What a delight talking to Cuckfield Flower Club about sustainable floristry techniques and British flowers last night. Such a welcoming and interested group who are keen on ditching floral foam and finding out about local flower growers. These ladies lived through ages before plastic and oasis was even invented and remember all the foam free floral mechanics used in the olden days now being reintroduced. and flower farming has been transforming the scene of local cut flower availability in the past 10-15 years and without it we wouldn’t be spoiled for choice as we are today. How else could I pick cut flower grade corn cockles or chocolate nicotiana right on my doorstep? There are many excellent growers like in Sussex just to name a few near me and please mention in comments below any other you know as the list is growing. For the pinnacle of sustainable floristry visit the floral exhibits at flower festival in September to see all the beauty put on display by growers and florists of cut flowers curated by the legends .chappell.flowers and this flower festival is in its 5th year and I was lucky to be part of the very first exhibit they curated.

Pitfield Barn Flowers is my very local flower farm where I source most of my cut flowers for wedding work and also have been working with Emma and Peter for a few years now putting my horticultural and cut flower growing background to good use - the fields are looking particularly lovely at the moment with several beautiful new and old varieties of cut flowers despite all the weather related difficulties growers have been battling with. cafe is open Thursday-Saturday with very good coffee and cake made by Scotty so if you’re local to this part of Sussex come and check it out. There are several events, design and craft workshops available and I’m looking forward to meeting some of you this Friday on a joint bouquet making and Pilates morning with Becky from the gardens are also open for NGS at the end of the month where Emma will take visitors on tours around the extensive flower fields.
