How's your week going? A special S/O to our local Te Waipounamu South Island communities preparing for : we are looking forward it!

We would've all at some point this last week checked in on the 2024 Hibiscus Festival - Congratulations & Bravo to all the contestants and to the organisers for bringing it back. For now, thanks to the National Archives of Fiji, we are to have an idea here of Hibiscus looked like back in 1971, 1972 and 1976!

Have a great rest-of-the-week!

Film of the '71, '72 and '76 Hibiscus Festivals. Footage covers some activities, float processions and the crowning night.

Yadra vina, Namaskar everyone!
Final day for ordering some confederacy colours today with these πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΎ tee shirts.

Please click on this link: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=Jxd43A5xVUi8TGkCZqG1UUOZKWd-KypGoRpgg99qPzZUN0JaNzdXRlQxWDVKSDMxQlVRSlRTMEVDUC4u to place your order.

Each community may have its own tees and that’s cool. These are specific to confederacy colours organised by our host community, Selwyn. As we will have some confederacy-based friendly competitions, and if you’re not β€œfeeling” the tees, come in your confederacy colours anyway!

*Adding a map shared earlier to remind us of which areas belong to which confederacy …. don’t forget we will have quizzes (maybe study the map πŸ‘€πŸ˜ƒ)

Oratory contests, quiz and poetry will all be part of our celebration - and there will be prizes! Apart from updates, we will be sharing information which may (or may not) make it to the quiz .. starting with this fantastic gem: that Fijians had their own traditional nature-based calendar? Let's start with the Gregorian month of September ... πŸ‘‡πŸ½πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ‘‡πŸΏπŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸΌπŸ‘‡πŸ»

Vinaka Ashburton Community for hosting us last night for our final monthly meeting. Shifting to weekly meeting mode now as we firm up on plans for a memorable Te Waipounamu South Island Fiji Day. We even managed a Father’s Day cake and some tea in. Community reps will be updating their respective members this week, if not already.

Food stalls and sport slots have all been filled. Don’t forget that Fijian Language Week will precede our Fiji Day weekend: oratory, poetry and beginners Fijians will all be part of the day: to end Fijian Language Week proper.

Please keep checking in on here for updates! Have a fantabulous week and plenty bright sun sunny days ahead!

Bula eveyone, Kia Ora.
Sharing a brief video from the National Archives of Fiji on our Independence Day, October 10, 1970, as we look forward to in Otautahi Christchurch.

"Today is a proud day for us all for today we assume the control of our own destiny and take on full adult responsibilities after a long period of tutelage. But we do not only take the responsibilities of ourselves, we take it on for each other. We are a community of races with different cultures, customs and languages but the things that unite us far outnumber those in which we differ. Above all there is our fixed, joint determination to build a strong united Fiji, rich in its diversity and tempered with tolerance, goodwill and understanding. Given a happy continuance of these conditions, and we must all contribute positively to them, I am confident that Fiji can show the world an example of harmony and progress out of all proportions to it's size." - the late Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara after accepting the instruments of independence from the Prince of Wales now HM King Charles III who represented his late mother, HM Queen Elizabeth II.

[Please note that we will be running online competitions. Prizes will be given on October 12th at the Fiji Day celebration in Rolleston. Q&A will test your general knowledge questions; some will be based on the historical and current content we will be sharing from this page!]
