Today, it has a Principal, a Vice-Principal, 28 highly qualified full-time tutors, over 2000 members and students.
Developing and sustaining that curriculum has by far been one of the greatest challenges for the Society, but one that has yielded many benefits. It has fostered homegrown talents and created an awareness and understanding of the Indian cultural heritage, which is particularly valuable in the multi-ethnic Singapore.

Music possesses the tremendous ability to unite artists, transcend barriers and create shared experiences. Recently, SIFAS Hindustani Vocal Guru Sonali Sinha had the esteemed opportunity to present the finest tenets of Hindustani music before an enthusiastic batch of students from NUS.
Coming from various backgrounds in terms of their formal music training, Guru Sonali’s audience included budding pianists, composers and more. The bright-eyed students inquired from her about the renowned Guru-shishya parampara prevalent in the field of Indian arts, as well as the system of learning that SIFAS practices. Guru Sonali also shared with them an informative presentation shedding more light on the different genres of Hindustani music.
It is SIFAS’ cherished desire to witness the proliferation of Indian arts in Singapore, and exchanges with musicians from different fields greatly inspires our arts community. We eagerly anticipate similar opportunities to meet again with such enthusiastic learners.

For Ms Natarajan Shanmuga Vadivu, student of SIFAS Visual Arts tutor Guru Raguveeran Palraj, passion found her without her having to go in search of it. A small spark of interest in art propelled her into a transformative journey of discovery and imagination.
Vadivu’s inclination towards the canvas remained undiscovered for long. When she took up Visual Arts at SIFAS, Vadivu little expected the profound impact that it would bring into her life. Her exploration of art began with traditional forms of art, such as Tanjore paintings, and grew to include western styles such as realism and abstraction.
“Infinite Dimensions” offers a glimpse into Vadivu’s artistic journey. The exhibition features her experimentation with watercolours, textures, and movement. Transcending traditional canvases, her delicate colour palette contrasts with the imposing scale of her pieces, creating deep and meditative spaces.
It is noteworthy that this exhibition is the first of its kind in the history of SIFAS. While art exhibitions have been formerly conducted to showcase the artworks of multiple students, “Infinite Dimensions” exclusively highlights the artistic flair of Ms Vadivu.
When asked about her major takeaways from this unique experience, Ms Vadivu remarked, “The results from this exhibition have exceeded my expectations. I am encouraged by the appreciation from artists and non-artists alike, and am inspired by their feedback to explore new dimensions of my artwork. I would like to think that this is merely the beginning of my artistic exploration, and look forward to reimagining my art in new ways.”
As they chase artistic excellence, SIFAS takes great pleasure in seeing our students nurture the seedlings of passion. “Infinite Dimensions” sets the precedent for many more exciting opportunities to showcase our budding talents.
If you haven’t visited the exhibition yet, hurry! Vadivu’s art will be on display till 24th October (Thurs) at SIFAS Dhwani Black Box, 2A Starlight Road, #02-06, Singapore 217755. See you there!

Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society or SIFAS is committed to the teaching of Indian classical fine arts in a helpful domain with high standards and exclusive requirements. Its philosophy is portrayed in its motto in Sanskrit, which states: ‘Kala Samskrithi Lakshanam’ – Art Characterizes Civilisation.
SIFAS is a non-profit Indian cultural organisation in Singapore that has achieved a high level of technical excellence in Indian Fine Arts. Students can choose to graduate with a Certificate or Diploma. Graduates educated and trained at SIFAS provide principal support to other Indian cultural groups in Singapore and the region. The contribution of the Society to Indian Fine Arts in Singapore has been extensive.
The Society began humbly in 1949 with only 12 members. Today it has a Principal, 27 qualified and competent full time teachers, over 1600 members and 2000 students with a pan-Indian curriculum of 14 disciplines that reflects the cultural diversity of a vast country with an ancient heritage. Developing and sustaining that curriculum has been one of the greatest challenges for the Society so far, but one, which has yielded many benefits. It has fostered home grown talents and created an awareness and understanding of the Indian cultural heritage, particularly valuable in the multi-ethnic Singapore.
To a large extent, the growth of SIFAS has paralleled the growth of Singapore. From tough, early years, it has graduated to an expansive period through the 80s and early 90s when it received much government support and consolidated its position. In the 21st Century, it focuses on creating its brand and enhancing standards further.
In the early years, the Society’s efforts were principally directed towards the organisation of concerts in music and dance by local and visiting performers. In the 1950s, efforts were channelled towards the creation of an Academy to provide tuition in the Indian fine arts, initially in Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam. The academy was formally established in 1959.
SIFAS will continue to resonate with the transformation of Singapore into a global city for arts. It is prepared to face the challenges as competition increases and taste the sweet success of rising to the quality and standards expected of a premier arts organisation. It will help Singapore in achieving its ambitious goal of redefining the identity by moving to a multi-cultural platform from a quintessentially Indian one, without losing its spirit and flavour.
