✨ Happy Diwali! ✨

This past weekend marked the start of the five-day festival of Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs around the world.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a Hindu festival widely celebrated in India and other parts of the world. It marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival usually lasts for five days and is one of the most significant and popular festivals in Hinduism.

During Diwali, people decorate their homes with colorful rangoli (decorative patterns made on the floor), light oil lamps and candles, burst fireworks, exchange gifts, and share festive meals with family and friends. The lighting of lamps signifies the removal of spiritual darkness and the beginning of a new, enlightened phase.

Diwali is a time for joy, reflection, and the strengthening of relationships. May these 5 Days of Diwali fill your life with light, joy, and endless blessings.

Wishing you a luminous and Happy Diwali! 🪔🌟

10/10/2023

October 10th is World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind the theme, "Mental health is a universal human right” to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right.

On October 10, we can support these efforts by reflecting on our own biases regarding mental health and advocating against social stigma related to it.

For information and resources, several organizations are listed below.

World Health Organization
https://www.who.int/about

Mental Health America
https://lnkd.in/gkm5UBg

National Alliance on Mental Health
https://www.nami.org/Home

Let's come together to raise awareness and show support for mental health. Remember, it's okay not to be okay, and seeking help is a sign of strength.

🌍🌱 Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day 🌱🌍

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October to honor the cultures, histories, and contributions of the Native American people. The day is centered around reflecting on their tribal roots and the tragic stories that hurt but strengthened their communities.

On October 8, 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden became the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday, by signing a presidential proclamation declaring October 11, 2021, to be a national holiday.

Let's commit to:
✨ Learning about Indigenous cultures and histories.
✨ Supporting Indigenous-owned businesses and initiatives.
✨ Advocating for the rights and recognition of Indigenous communities.
✨ Amplifying Indigenous voices in our work and decision-making processes.

In honor of the PCMA Greater Midwest Chapter's 30th Anniversary, we're sharing some of our favorite memories from the last 30 years!

We've always offered plenty of networking opportunities at our events. Back in the day we sported a lot more business suits and blazers, and fashionable sneakers were nowhere to be found, but we still knew how to have fun and we're still taking care of business today.

This week (October 1-7) is Banned Books Week!

The main purpose of Banned Books Week is to raise awareness about censorship and the challenges that books and other materials face in being restricted or banned in schools, libraries, and communities across the United States and in some other countries.

The goal of Banned Books Week is to encourage open-mindedness, freedom of expression, and the importance of preserving diverse voices and perspectives in literature. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect and defend the First Amendment rights in the United States, including the freedom to read without censorship.

Working with the support of organizations such as the American Library Association, we need to do all that we can to support and advocate for libraries, schools, and the freedom to read.

Join Honorary Chair, LeVar Burton, live on Instagram October 4, at 8:00 pm EDT.

The PCMA Greater Midwest Chapter celebrates !

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate Hispanic and Latinx culture. Additionally, it’s a time to learn about Hispanic history and support causes related to the Hispanic community.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

The PCMA Greater Midwest Chapter joins our Jewish friends and colleagues in honoring Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in the Jewish calendar.

Yom Kippur is a time for profound self-reflection, repentance, and seeking forgiveness. It reminds us of the power of introspection, reconciliation, and the capacity for personal growth.

As we mark this sacred day, let us all strive for greater understanding, empathy, and unity within our communities. May the spirit of Yom Kippur inspire us to approach life with renewed purpose and a commitment to building a more just and compassionate world.

Wishing you a meaningful Yom Kippur filled with peace, atonement, and spiritual enrichment.

Happy New Year! Rosh Hashanah, meaning "head of the year" in Hebrew, is the celebration of the Jewish New Year.

Rosh Hashanah observances include special foods, traditions and mitzvahs, or commandments, and celebrations can vary from family to family. Many people attend services at a temple or synagogue, where a special service is held with messages of hope and atonement in the new year.

This year in 2023, Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday, Sept. 15, and ends at sunset on Sunday, September 17. Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement will begin at sunset on Sunday, September 24 and ends at sunset on Monday, September 25. The shofar, a horn from an animal such as a ram, is sounded as a call for repentance and sacrifice during Yom Kippur.
