Fall is the best time to identify buckthorn via its glossy green leaves, a thorn at the tip of the twig, and round dark purple berries.

Follow these tips for buckthorn removal:
- For seedlings and small plants, hand pull plants ensuring to remove all of the root ball from the soil
- For larger plants, use a pruners or handsaw to remove a majority of the branches and foliage
- Remove and discard of any berries
- Thoroughly spray undiluted herbicide concentrate directly onto the cut stumps or limbs
