Taking an adults-only trip can be a refreshing approach to travel. Whether it’s to enjoy some alone time with your partner, create long-lasting memories with a group or friends or simply indulge in a quiet vacation, cruise lines are redefining this experience with dedicated adults-only ships and itineraries. For some 18+ travel inspiration, check out these four cruise options.
A popular adults-only line, Virgin Voyages is a fan favorite for a reason. Three ships are currently in operation — Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady — with a fourth, Brilliant Lady, making its inaugural sailing in 2025. Each ship carries around 2,770 passengers and has a minimum age requirement of 18 years or older, so cruise-goers can expect to see some fresh faces amongst the mature Sailors. With (almost) four ships on the water, itinerary options are endless, spanning from the Caribbean, North America and Europe to Australia and the South Pacific.
Of course, while traveling from one magical destination to the next is the highlight of any cruise, the onboard accommodations play an underrated role in the overall experience. Break a sweat at B-Complex, rejuvenate at Redemption Spa, indulge in some pampering at The Tune Up, or head over to Squid Ink, the onboard tattoo parlor, for a daring change of pace. Passengers sailing in the fall should also check out Virgin’s newest addition, the 8 Legs Run Club, which brings together runners of all backgrounds and fitness levels for some refreshing laps around the outdoor track. Virgin Voyages’ Fair and Flexible Fares include over 20 specialty eateries, gratuities, Wi-Fi and entertainment opportunities.
VIKING OCEAN CRUISES
Taking a less traditional approach to adults-only cruising, many passengers find that Viking caters to those between the ages of 55 and 75, though the only true age requirement by the line is at least 18 or older. Nine ocean ships with a 930-passenger capacity make up the fleet, two of which are specifically designed for expedition cruising. Viking has a large presence in Scandinavia, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, but other destinations include Alaska, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Canada, South America, Asia and Australia. Itinerary length also varies greatly, allowing passengers to choose from short eight-day trips to world journeys at 180 days.
Viking fares include Wi-Fi, one shore excursion in each port of call, port taxes and fees, access to the onboard Nordic Spa, beer, wine or soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner, specialty dining and 24-hour room service. Entertainment aboard Viking is certainly more adult-oriented, with opportunities for cultural lectures, classical music performances, TED Talks and even a cooking school at The Kitchen Table.
P&O CRUISES
Peninsular and Oriental, or P&O Cruises, is a U.K.-based line owned by the well-known Carnival Corporation. While the two ships, Aurora and Arcadia, are both designated as adults-only (18+), their onboard experiences and size differ. Aurora is the line’s smallest ship, with a capacity of 1,874 passengers, and boasts three pools, seven restaurants and 11 bars and cafes. Cruisegoers on this vessel will find a theater, cinema, library, art gallery, card room and lounge to serve all their entertainment needs. Arcadia, on the other hand, accommodates 2,388 passengers and features two pools, 15 bars and restaurants, a casino and The Globe for movies, art auctions or live music. The fares for both vessels cover the basics, such as most onboard activities, use of complimentary facilities and main meals.
Despite the differences in the ships themselves, travelers will find that the itineraries are quite similar. P&O offers “Short Breaks,” which generally range from three-five nights, in addition to their standard four, seven or 14-night itineraries. Most often, the ships depart from Southampton, England, and venture to destinations such as Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean and North America. Travelers should be sure to check out P&O’s 30-night itineraries as well for an extended vacation experience.
SAGA CRUISES
Unlike most other adults-only cruise lines, Saga enforces a 50 and older age restriction, though guests are allowed to bring one companion along over the age of 40. The British line features two ships, the Spirit of Adventure and the Spirit of Discovery, which can accommodate up to 987 passengers. As to be expected considering its British heritage, both vessels depart from Dover, Portsmouth or Tilbury in England. Saga itineraries tend to range from 14 to 28 nights, emphasizing destinations in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Scandinavia and the U.K.
While cruising with Saga may not be the most convenient option for passengers based outside the country, its all-inclusive fares are certainly enticing. From meals, Wi-Fi, unlimited beverages (including alcohol) and gratuities to excursions and spa access, the onboard experience will leave travelers thoroughly impressed. Fill up any remaining downtime with dancing, art classes, musical performances, wine tastings or cooking classes, all inspired by the itinerary’s port of call.
