Providing music for a work event, some co-workers stop by to chat.

"Is all this stuff yours?"
"Yep. I have several different sized set ups."
"Oh, you mean like tiny speakers?"
"No. It depends on the size of the event. If it's a small backyard event I'll use a smaller system. If it's a ballroom sized event, I'll use a larger system."
"How did you learn all this?"
"Experience."

Another co-worker comes up and says "Danny! Are you playing the music?"

My other co-worker looks at them and says sarcastically "No, Danny just likes to stand around with headphones on..."

"Really? Wow...I thought you were the DJ."

"Really? I just heard of them."
"Yeah, they're very famous. International, world-wide famous. Like Black Pink."
"Who's Black Pink?"
"Basically the female version of BTS."
"BTS does drag?!?!?"

"this only happens to a DJ" #529: The event was a success! Everyone is tired and hot; those who are still around are part of the clean up crew for the event.

"Is that your table?" someone asks.
"Yes! Thank you."
"Is that your table?" another person asks.
"Yes, thanks."
"Is that your table?" a third person asks.
"Yes, thank you for asking."
"Is that your table?" a fourth person asks.
"Yes. Yes, it is."
"Is that your table?" fifth person asks.
"Yes."


The organizer is passing by, so I stop her. "I commend your crew! They are very thorough and have tried to take my table five times now!" (lol)
She says "OMG! I keep sending people over to you to ask if you need help, not to take the table!"

We both laugh.

When you win at music trivia, people say "oh, it's because you're a dj" and I always say "no, it's because I love music."

I know many DJ's that know nothing of classical music, or music from beyond their lifetime.

My love for music drives me to do things like search YouTube for random musical acts. I especially love the "best of" compilations (such as "The Voice" "X Factor" etc.)

This video is so worth the watch. I was at work, and still I could not help but tear up from the emotion of this song.

If you love music, I promise you'll love this performance.

"this only happens to a dj" #528: I'm spinning at Splash, and my time is up. The next DJ is waiting to enter the DJ booth. I'm rushing to pack up my board and computer.

"Hey, let me reconnect the main for you." I say to him.
"You don't need to." he says.
"If it isn't reconnected, the board won't work for you."
"It's ok, I got it."

I get the feeling he doesn't understand what I'm trying to say but won't admit it. I'm packed up, and getting ready to walk away when I feel a tap on my shoulder.

"Hey, I can't get my board to work."

"this only happens to a dj" #526: {NAMES CHANGED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT...LOL}

I'm asked for a quote for an event. I explain the market prices, and then explain that I give discounts to my friends and their friends.

I give her the normal rate I would charge the general public, and then the rate I offered her as a "friend of a friend". Even with the friends discount, she was taken aback at the cost of a DJ for an event.

Me - "Have you run an event like this before?"
Possible Client - "No."
"Okay, I understand. I know if this is the first time you're getting quotes it may sound like a lot. Please feel free to call and get quotes from other DJ companies, I don't mind at all."
"Oh, okay...thank you. Do you have any recommendations?"
I offer information on two other reputable DJ's in the area. She calls me back later...

"Did you give me those recommendations because they are the most expensive???"
"I assure you, I only recommend those who would be professional and reliable. There are many DJ's out there that would probably cost a lot less, but when it comes to DJ's, you really do get what you're paying for... and I won't recommend someone who would do a bad job because that reflects on me, too."
She hangs up on me.

Two weeks later, this woman's daughter calls me.

"Hi, I'm ****** 's daughter. Are you still available for our event?"
"Yes, but I thought she was going with someone else?"
"We met with another DJ, and he didn't seem to really know what he was doing when we started talking about our event. He definitely wasn't as nice and you, and my friend ******** recommended you, and I trust her."
"It's smart to go with a personal recommendation, that's true. It did bother me when your mom hung up on me when I was trying to help."
"PLEASE don't hold that against us!!"

(I didn't.)

I'm at my day job, Second Harvest. A volunteer comes up to me and says "HEY! I saw you last month!"

"Yes, I've been here for a few years now..."
"No...last month."
"OH...ok...(confused expression on my face, I'm sure)"
"You were that DJ."
"What venue?"
"On the mountain!"

I struggled to figure out what she was talking about, when I realized she was referring to a wedding I did in October! She was delighted to recognize me, and said she hoped I would (someday) DJ live, here in our Cypress Center.

I'm volunteering for a non-profit. The event could not be filled with a more diverse crowd. All ages...all ethnicities...

"Can you play Uptown Funk?"
"Can you play this Cambodian love song...you'll love it! I has a great beat! It's in Cambodian, but everyone will love it!"
"Can you play some 70s?"
"Can you play some 80s?"
"Can you play some Taylor Swift?"

Yes. Yes, I can. I'm the DJ and I can play anything you want!

"this only happens to a dj" #524: Successful birthday party! Everyone leaves as I break down my equipment. I'm the last person to leave the banquet room located in a country club/golf course restaurant.

The road/front gate is closed and locked. I'm trapped. I call the client and ask for help and they say "oh...You have to call the city police and they will come unlock the gates so you can drive out." WhatTheHeck?!?

I drive back to the restaurant in hopes there might be one person there. I re-enter the restaurant: it's an eerie ghost town feel. I explore offices, the kitchen, etc. Not one person. Creeped out by how alone I am, I get into my vehicle and start driving on golf cart side roads, hoping to find a way out. I finally find a gap through trees into a tech company's back parking lot three miles north of the front gate!

As I break through the brush (thank goodness I had an SUV/all wheel drive!) I come out on a sidewalk! Sadly, I had to drive over a little bit of landscaping to get off the sidewalk. A security guard comes out of the building waving his arms at me as I drive away making my escape! Who wants to explain what just happened? Not me!!

Entering Splash, I'm greeted by the bar manager. He's happy to see me and asks me if I can "fix" their sound system. The upstairs sound isn't working even though I'm set up and everything registers on my end.

I have no idea how their system works; the set up in their closet looks like a security alarm system for a business.

I begin pushing buttons and scrolling through menus. Somehow, the system starts to work! The evening's dance party can finally begin!
