Fun Fact: The Campus sits on the banks of scenic Lake Austin, a water reservoir on the Colorado River and part of the Highland Lakes. Lake Austin is maintained at a constant level by the Mansfield Dam and the Tom Miller Dam.

There are seven Highland Lakes, part of a series of freshwater lakes in Central Texas along the lower Colorado River. Lake Austin is the sixth lake down in the chain. The lake starts at the Mansfield Dam and ends at the Tom Miller Dam in the city of Austin.

Around 200 boulders found on site have been repurposed as environmental helpers, creating small check-dams to filter water as it flows through shallow channels called swales. The swales are planted with a variety of trees, shrubs, and grasses that act as natural pollutants removers. Nestled inside the swales, check-dams help prevent erosion and provide additional filtering for pollutants.

The courtyard fountain draws its water from an under-ground 2,500-gallon tank, which collects water from the air conditioning systems used to cool several buildings on site. As air circulates through the system it is cooled and dehumidified, producing condensation. Those droplets are collected in the tank and used to supply water to our beautiful fountain.

At least half of all pedestrian areas and pathways are made up of permeable paving – interlocking concrete pavers that allow water to absorb into the ground. In addition to reducing stormwater runoff, permeable paving traps, and filter out solid pollutants that may travel with the water into Lake Austin.

The Campus on Lake Austin’s 26 rain gardens are not only nice to look at, they serve a purpose – collecting and filtering stormwater runoff from roofs, roads, and sidewalks. The shallow depressions teeming with native shrubs and grasses are strategically placed to absorb runoff into the soil, preventing erosion and capturing and cleaning pollutants before they can flow into the lake.

The Coffee Bar provides specialty coffee drinks and smoothies during the day and libations before dinner. Guests can order their drink and relax at the counter seating, wander the grounds or settle into the library and sit by the fireplace as they enjoy their tasty drinks.
