Whitney Gaines is a biracial (Black and white) abolitionist educator with ten years of experience pushing against systems of oppression in education. They’ve taught classes as far reaching as comedy writing to SEL & activism. They’re also an award-winning nonfiction writer who writes about gender, race, mental health, class, and ability in a way that manages to make people think AND laugh.

Theory and Practice is their brain child; they wanted a space to do the sort of abolitionist, radical, and fun work they were prevented from doing in the system!

Theory and Practice will offer book clubs for the curious with facilitated discussions, tangible action items, and plenty of jokes.

How to Prepare:
Just be ready to relax and play. You will NOT be asked to perform for others unless you wish- and the games are high-energy but introvert-friendly. If you wish, you can look at the attached document “Principles of Improv-Informed Excellence” to review some of the core principles we follow in this work but don’t worry if you don’t have time or interest. This is no homework experience! Just fun.
What to Bring and What to Wear:
a) Bring water and a snack if you need it- I will not be providing food or drinks.
b) We play games and do activities that require motion as part of our learning together. Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in and shoes that are easy to stand in.

In the past week, I have heard of 3 woman-owned businesses that are either closing or at-risk of closing. Things are TOUGH and that is the real story- not the shiny, corporate, sponsored, behind-the-scenes bankrolled small business version that some folk like to hype.

So let's talk about Hope Tank for a second. There is often a disconnect where it seems like people think that I have some magical, mystery money tree that allows me to keep it all afloat.

Turns out I do not, and I need to be more vocal about the support that I need to get us out of the hole that doing business through covid and community crisis created. And by hole, I mean crater.

The new space is dreamy. Like really wonderful and it turns out it's perfection for meeting a lot of specific community needs for space. We are a Third Space that serves smaller groups and is turnkey at this point, so lots of different folks can access the space and come and go as they need at all hours, 7 days a week.

With your help, I could provide more free and low-cost space and if that's important to you to be a part of that ecosystem, here are the requests for discounted and free space that I've received in just the past couple weeks that I can't say yes to:

Moms on the Mic is happening next Tuesday, April 16 from 5:30-7:30 at Hope Tank

What is Moms on the Mic?
Great question, glad you asked.

Think of it as an open mic for moms. You have something to share, might be a story, comedy, poetry, song, interpretive dance? Whatever you want to share, we want to hear it.

Moms have a lot to say and we deserve to be heard and what better way than to share in front of other moms.

This event is limited to 20 people so it’s an intimate gathering and one that is extremely supportive.

AND you can bring food and beverages into Hope Tank, so grab your friends, grab your tickets, and some nibbles and come join us for a night of connection.

🌟 And if you are thinking, well I love the idea of hanging with moms but I don’t want to share anything, that’s ok too! Just come and be in community with other moms.
