Tonight July 18, Tune into Fresh Fruit, 7-8 pm CDT with Dixie for a Special Remembrance of longtime KFAI volunteer Patricia Nelson“Pat”(August 20 1955, in Brooklyn, N. Y. - January 29th, 2024 in Minneapolis)
She started at KFAI in 1997 and wore many hats into 2022 including host and engineer with the Le***an Power Authority, Womanist Power Authority, Fresh Fruit and The Wave Project. She also was a board member, participated in International Women’s Day and Black History Month programming and taught board certification classes for many years.
She was also a computer consultant, Ham Radio operator, Haiku poet and Buddhist.
Pat will be missed by many. Condolences to her life partner Kim Hines/ Studio Egg LLC(also a former Fresh Fruit host), family and friends.
I always enjoyed seeing and speaking with Pat. Somehow she could be funny and serious at the same time.
Tonight I’ll be playing excerpts of interviews I did with Pat over the years about her experiences with KFAI, and a special memory interview with Mike Stapp, her longtime board certification teaching partner and Ham Radio inspiration. Plus music that Pat used on her Fresh Fruit show.

Pat’s Celebration of Life Service on May 18, 2024 was live streamed and recorded: https://watchitlivestream.com/p-nelson/

Tonight August 17, Tune into Fresh Fruit, 7-8 pm CST with Dixie for a JOE MEEK TRIBUTE.
Robert George "Joe" Meek (1929-1967) born in Newent, Gloucestershire, England was a pioneering gay record producer and engineer. A gay man in the 1950s didn't only face being beaten up but also being arrested because homosexuality was outlawed. Joe moved to London in 1953.

He made a major breakthrough in sound production in the 1950s & 60s with his innovative recording and pioneering studio techniques such as multiple over-dubbing, close miking, direct input of bass guitars, the compressor, and effects like echo and reverb as well as sampling. Even today his influence as a producer and audio engineer remains in the recording industry.

Joe is also widely remembered for his concept album “I Hear A New World” (1960) and his song "Telstar" (1962), recorded by the Tornados, which became the first record by a British group to reach No.1 on the US Hot 100 and spent five weeks atop the UK singles chart. On February 3, 1967 Meek shot his landlady and then himself.
All songs played tonight were produced by Joe Meek.

06/15/2023

Tonight June 15, Tune into Fresh Fruit, 7-8 pm CST with Dixie for a Tribute to Jean-Nickolaus Tretter (1946-2022), gay, archivist, historian, and activist. Tonight I will be playing a short radio documentary I produced in 2010 entitled “The Tretter Collection: Preserving Q***r Culture”. It includes interviews with Jean Tretter and people who have used the archives for research, preservation, and education. I’ll also be playing an excerpt of an interview I did with Jean in 2012 about his radio show “Night Rivers” (mid-80’s-2000) on KFAI that highlighted LGBT classical music composers, and a clip of Jean doing his show in 1994 (courtesy of the Tretter Collection), plus an excerpt of his retirement reception, that I recorded in 2012, at the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter History Pavillion in Loring Park during TC Pride.

Jean was a visionary who saw the importance of saving q***r history and made sure it was preserved for future generations.
He began collecting everything he could that was LGBTQ2S+, including books, papers, pins, posters, letters, artifacts, etc,, in the early 1970’s when not many people even thought it was relevant. His collection eventually grew too large for his apartment and was taken in by the University of Minnesota in 2000. Now housed in the Elmer L. Anderson Library, tucked safely below the earth in a temperature controlled environment with thousands of international items, The Jean-Niclolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Le***an, Bisexual and Transgender Studies is one of the largest LGBTQ collections in the United States.

“A Celebration of Lffe for Jean-Nickolaus Tretter” will take place on Friday June 23, 2023 from 1pm-3pm CST.
Free and open to the public at the Elmer L Anderson Library, UMN and streamed live online.

Happy Pride Month!
https://www.kfai.org/minneculture-take-a-road-trip.../

Zaylore Stout (he/him) is a gay, African American attorney and author of “Our Gay History in Fifty States.” He was inspired to write “Our Gay History” while he was on a cross country road trip. Passing through Laramie, WY, he was reminded of Matthew Shepard, the gay student who was tortured and left to die in Laramie in 1998. Stout wanted to honor Shepard and other q***r Americans throughout history.
“Our Gay History in Fifty States” is an award-winning illustration of q***r American history on a state by state basis. Zaylore is currently working on his second book, “Our Black History in Fifty States.” KFAI’s Dixie Treichel spoke with Zaylore about his work and some of the Minnesotans who most inspire him.
