A Beat Happening is a free, all ages, music producer showcase for beat makers, DJs, and producers. principles and ideals.

A Beat Happening is an all-ages, not-for-profit beat maker showcase hosted by Future Shock, a record store, art gallery, designer toy and apparel store located at 1914 E Burnside in Portland, Oregon. It's also a monthly podcast from which we share the sounds and vibes that we are inspired by. But more than that, it's a communal space dedicated to the growth of the Portland left-field beat, hip-hop

We are completely not-for-profit and volunteer run, dedicated to D.I.Y. We are also dedicated to making our events a safe space for young people, women, and LGBTQIA, so please get with us if we should do better, and especially get with us if you are a young person, woman, and/or LGBTQIA who makes beats and/or DJs. JONAS
Jonas is a instrumental producer and artist/illustrator who performs under the stage name Luvjonez. He has released several instrumental beat tapes available on Spotify and streaming services, as well as his website www.luvjonezmusic.com . When he's not working on music, you can find him at live shows, eating chocolate everything, and traveling the globe. DERRICK
Derrick is the founder and co-runner of A Beat Happening. His first slab of wax was an emo record on white vinyl. He's since developed better taste in music. Check out his beats here: sembla.bandcamp.com. When he's not doing music-related stuff, you can find him eating vegan food, working at a non-profit, and chilling with his wife.

In the lead up to the 5 Year Anniversary this Sunday, we realized that while the ABH community might be familiar with the history, the larger city and any new folks might not know, so We created a quick recap and looooong caption to share the story below 🙌🏽
A Beat Happening is an all-ages, electronic/hip hop production showcase and music event, a YouTube channel, and record label, based in Portland, Oregon.

A Beat Happening started in JULY 2017 as an all-ages, not-for-profit beat maker showcase hosted at Future Shock, a record shop/art gallery/designer toy and vintage apparel retail store located at 1914 E Burnside in Portland, Oregon. The YouTube channel soon followed as a place to archive past performances and events.

The intention for the event is to create a communal space dedicated to the growth of the Portland left-field beatS, hip-hop, and DJ scene. Whether you just started making beats or you’re a seasoned vet, we give equal space to all skill levels.

We are completely not-for-profit and volunteer run, dedicated to D.I.Y. principles and ideals. We are also dedicated to making our events a safe space for young people, Femme-Identified people, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

So, please contact us if there are elements of community work that we can do better. Especially, reach out to us if you identify as a young person, woman OR Femme-identity, and/or LGBTQIA+ community member who makes beats and/or DJs, as we have found that these are the least represented groups in the Portland scene.

Extra shout out to of New Avenues INK] for partnering on some limited edition ABH t-shirts for the 5 year show! New Avenues INK] has been part of merch runs for A Beat Happening]] Friends of Noise ] and many more friends in the past so hit them up for local PDX merch. The New Avenues INK team and their mission-driven educational efforts to provide thousands of paid internship hours and career mentorship to young adults experiencing homelessness and housing instability is at the core of everything they do.
For the first 5 years of shows and events with ABH, we’ve been pretty DIY at the core, from shooting and editing video, to promoting on free social media, to printing up our own album sleeves and recording our own tapes, but for this big anniversary show, we wanted to focus on the event and people, and reached out to friends, homies and partners to help lift up the event and mark the occasion 🙌🏽

A Beat Happening]]] 5 Year Anniversary featuring host Luvjonez]]
To help honor the A Beat Happening]]] community that supported from day one, and grown to include folks who played their first ever show in public, to veterans of the game and award winning producers / musicians / artists, to community members who just wanted to connect to artists in the city, Luvjonez is proud to present an alumni show to celebrate this thing we all built together 🙌🏽. Many of the people who’ve met at ABH have gone on to create music and art together, have improved their skills, found new friendships, and linked with people and places all across PDX and surrounding areas as a result of coming to A Beat Happening]]] show.
From his work as an event producer by day at to his work as a solo artist as Luvjonez]] and collaborations with folks like Free Tillman] on albums like , their monthly beatmaker residency at , to collabs with many of the ABH fam on his album , to shouting out and for spreading indie beats and hip hop culture across the city, Luvjonez continues to advocate for artists of all mediums and skill levels to shine a light on the work happening all around us 🙌🏽

A great full circle moment for ABH is the story of Ms. Elle and her growth as an artist. From rocking at ABH, she linked with producers and and to produce her recent albums. Seeing those collaborations happen from attending the events, and seeing her expand from PDX to NYC has been fun for all of us, and we’re looking forward to having her back at the 5 Year show on the eve of her release for the album dropping on 8/26.

In the midst of the pandemic, and thanks to for popping up at ABH events in the past, we got to know the crew of and Grant Burgess]] who share production, recording and beat making to folks at the Gresham location. Because Grant Burgess]] is one half of the production duo who has consistently put out heat in the form of vinyl and cassettes with luminaries of the game like and collaborations with Ayatollah, among some of their notable projects.
