Whilst having good systems, processes & SOPs and training your team to utilise these are important in any business to provide consistency, efficiencies and to ensure you are following applicable regulatory guidelines, are you regularly checking in with the team to ensure they are following best business practices? Or is it just a checklist opportunity for your new starters?

For those in the Hospitality world, regular refresher training blocks can be challenging to roster & briefing times can be short so on-the-fly training becomes important to ensure gaps in your training processes are identified and corrected.

On the fly training can also be used to start discussions and lead into further learning opportunities and upskilling for all team members no matter whether they are new to your business, or you are lucky enough to have had them on board for a while.

Utilising On the Fly training cards as prompts for identifying gaps & as a starting point for discussions creates a fun way to engage team members at any stage of their journey. It was interesting to see that Host Responsibility was a gap area for new team members and employees that had been in the business for a while.

Host Responsibility is a regulatory area in the Hospitality industry, therefore, is something that must be implemented and followed to ensure compliance with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, to find that team members are not familiar with this can be concerning. Whilst they are trained to follow the principles of Host Responsibility, not knowing why they are doing this can still cause issues for your business.

What are the surprising gaps in learning for your business?
How are you upskilling your teams?

Arrgghhh – right back to basics in the world of Hospo

With the staffing shortages at the moment, employees coming through have little to no foundation skills when starting. Whilst training is provided, there’s a LOT to take in & finding out where the gaps are it’s a game of wait and see, followed by training on the fly – IF you have a chance to that is (very difficult to stop and train when service hits!).

So how can we get proactive and find the gaps without waiting for a guest interaction?

Let’s make it a game!

Trialled my DIY training cards last week during the downtime – a range of generic questions, to encourage learning & find the gaps! Was a little worried about how they’d take it, but with the words – go pick a card, off they went!

They made their own rules up…. Shuffle the cards, pick one and ask the question. Game ends once 5 cards are answered correctly by each person.

So did it work… YES! The team went into service with enthusiasm, and yes I did manage to find a gap & had the time to cover off the learning opportunity prior to service.

Still have a bit of tweaking to do with the ‘rules’ but the possibilities are there

Feedback from the staff – “Better than the crosswords in the paper”, “I like the practical ones”

Might be time to get a decent batch of cards printed

How are you dealing with training at the moment?

Well it’s been a while….

Rest assured though I’ve been busy!

◾️ Extending my skill base & utilising existing skills
◾️ Re-establishing connections whilst helping out in the very short-handed hospo & events industry
◾️ Being part of some amazing celebrations!

It’s been great seeing and working with a few familiar faces throughout the year & totally grateful for the opportunities that keep coming my way.

With one of my roles winding down I am looking forward to the festive season ahead before the search starts for the next challenge.

Taking time today to look back on the past few months…. (and yes there’s many more experiences not captured in images but definitely in the memory bank!)

NB for one that is usually on the other side of the camera – there’s actually a few photos of me this time round… grateful to the photographers & those that actually wanted to take a photo with me!

Hello!

I’m on the lookout for Hospitality (and possibly Retail) venue operators/owners who may be willing to assist me with a bit of gap analysis.

I am looking at niching down from what I am currently offering in the Business Support area from general assistance to a more targeted approach utilising my skills gained over the past few decades in the hospitality and retail space.

With 20+ years of experience in the Hospitality industry including 10 years providing system administration and operation support to multiple venues in the areas of CRM, Reservations, Supply Chain P2P, Stock Control along with making recommendations on workflow & SOP efficiencies, I am looking to understand whether there are gaps in these areas which I may be able to niche into to assist owner/operators in the Hospitality field so that YOU have more time to focus on other areas to maximise your business opportunities.

I am looking to understand what is important / your needs relating to – General Business Processes/Administration | Pre-Launch/Go Live & Ongoing Business administration or support

Encompassing – Process Flows, Workflows, SOPs, Systems (setting up/optimising existing), POS, CRM, Lead Generation/Funnels, Cost Control, Stocktakes, COS/COG, Templates, Workforce Planning, Promotions.

Owning a business is multi-faceted, as an owner/operator a lot of different elements needs to be managed to optimise your business, from creating and maintaining business plans, defining workflows & SOPs, HR, Recruitment through to getting the aesthetics of the venue right and suppliers sorted, not to mention the stress and emotion leading into the pre-opening and launch. Plus once you have opened spending time reviewing processes and systems to optimise business is ongoing.

SURVEY LINK: https://bit.ly/3tOlcxX

This is an anonymous survey & there is no obligation to engage my services!

Please feel free to share to your networks as I would love to reach as many business owners/operators as possible.

I appreciate your time in assisting me with my gap analysis research,
Jody Wong

I’ve worked with Filipo Levi a few times now covering RUBC events, whilst this has always been a great opportunity to hear from former professional rugby players and learn about how they transitioned to a new career, stoked to get the call up to be able to support the successful launch of Filipo’s book Tackle Your Success over the weekend.

This is his story – put into a book, with strategies you can take away with you and read when you’re ready!

Whilst I definitely don’t fit into the category of a Professional Athlete (way too uncoordinated as a youngster haha – and PE was probably the least favourite subject at school), the principles covered in Tackle Your Success still applies to those looking to transition in their career path.

I’m not yet at a stage where I can say I’ve read this book cover to cover – but from what I’ve ‘tackled’ so far – highly recommend!

Everyone has a story, only a few have the confidence to share theirs in a book.

If you’re interested in getting a copy for yourself head to Filipo’s website
https://www.filipolevi.com/tackleyoursuccess

Thank you Filipo for allowing me to work with you for your launch event, and congratulations – you are now an author!

Facilitating Learning?

Whether it’s a topic you regularly provide training on, or you’ve been just been asked to train someone – ensuring you have a lesson plan in place is key.

A lesson plan should include –

Target Audience
Objective
Challenges
Areas of Focus
Outcomes

If you have a standard template – GREAT! But before you get started sharing your knowledge, a top tip would be to review your plan and adapt if needed.

WHY? Not everyone absorbs information in the same way.

Whilst it’s important to keep your objectives, focus areas and outcomes consistent your target audience and therefore your challenges may change so if you are using a standard lesson plan it’s recommended you look at whether you need to adapt your plan to suit.

Ask yourself

- Who are your learners, are their roles entry level or are they leaders in your business, do they come from different areas within the business, how much knowledge of the topic do they have, how do they learn, are there any cultural barriers?

- Do you need to tailor your training to beginner/intermediate/advanced levels?

- Do you have real world examples applicable to your learners?

“The improvement of understanding is for two ends: first, our own increase of knowledge; secondly, to enable us to deliver that knowledge to others.” – John Locke

Have we missed anything? Keen to learn more on this topic? – let us know in the comments.

Does having good CX only apply to customers that you think may get you a sale or lead? Or should this be part of your business when dealing with all types of enquiries?

Whist not all enquiries may directly be seen as a lead, a less than impressive reply to a general enquiry can impact future leads.

A recent experience has me wondering whether this is something that businesses put emphasis on, do they just not care, or do they not realise that peoples brand perception can be eroded?

Busy or not – a friendly reminder to just pause and have a think before pressing send, especially if this is your first interaction with someone!

First impressions matter!

Or do they? – thoughts?

Grateful once again to be supporting the World Schools 7's and the NZ Barbarian Rugby at the latest edition of the annual World School 7s tournament held in Auckland.

This two day tournament showcases some of the best emerging talent from around the country and what a weekend of action it was!

Whilst it was a busy weekend capturing images of the tournament from behind the lens on behalf of the World School 7’s crew, as well as representing the NZ Barbarians as operations/team manager, it makes it all worthwhile to be part of an event that gives young people the opportunities that this tournament provides.

It’ll definitely be a watch this space for a few of these upcoming stars!

Looking forward to the next edition later in the year!

Phil Gaze Rocky Khan - another great tournament ticked off! Awesome effort & thank you for getting me involved.

Sometimes the unknown is a hidden roadblock - if existing solutions do not fit, be willing to explore further.

Taking a look back to 7 years ago, preparing for a flight back to Tāmaki Makaurau (wow time flies).

A week spent in Darwin facilitating system & cost control training for the finance team, as well as taking on some ad hoc process reviews for the hospitality teams.

I'd spent time, prior to my visit, remotely supporting key team members from various departments, providing standard company process guides and tutorials. Although my objective was the training of the finance department, this also gave me the opportunity to review other areas of the business.

The key learning by doing this - don't assume things work the same way!

Same systems 👍
Different system intergration ✋

💡"Ahhhh this is why they struggled implementing certain processes"

If things don't fit, explore further.

A career highlight that came with opportunities to share & learn from an amazing team in a stunning location.

TOP TIP - for those wanting to extend their business networks and meet new people - if you get a chance to, volunteer your services to a group/community initiative.

The upside of providing services to community groups is not only the feel good component it is also giving you the opportunity to showcase your skills along with the ability to meet new people
and network with a wider audience.

You will find that many community groups are looking for a helping hand to actively support their cause - which could be anything from event support, team management, though to admin support.

One of our causes is giving back to to the Auckland Rugby Union Supporters Club by managing their Social Media pages and chairing the committee.

Over the weekend we headed out to the preseason/trial matches for The Blues U20s & Auckland Contenders to get some content for the ARUSC page - the start of the 2021 season, and a great opportunity to catch up with the rugby community.

Late last year we were engaged as a photographer for a Rugby Union Business Club networking event.

It was truly inspiring to hear the stories from the guest speakers in attendance, it reinforced for me the power of sharing our own personal stories.

All too often we keep our experiences to ourselves as we don't see our personal journey as a potential guiding light to others.

A worthwhile event to attend for those looking to the future & wanting to hear more about the challenges transitioning from professional athlete to business and network with like minded people.

The next RUBC networking event is coming up soon - if this sounds like something you'd like to attend, check out how to register in the link below.

It's that time of the year....

Some of us are winding down and looking forward to a well deserved break, whilst others are ramping up in the lead up to the festive season.

Functions, festive planning and perhaps holiday planning for some.

This is a time to appreciate your support crew, continue to network and plan for the year ahead!

We're still not yet in the wind down phase, with recent invites to the Auckland Rugby Annual Volunteers Event, and the Rugby Union Business Club (RUBC) Business and Wellbeing Event - hosted by Filipo Levi

It does feel great to be appreciated for service over the season, and to get opportunities to network, hear from some inspirational guest speakers and see some amazing new products!

A couple more events to go - then it's time for a small break!

We hope that everyone is able to enjoy some time of rest over this period!
